We will serve up a mix of plain, blueberry, and pecan pancakes with syrup (sugar free available), as well as coffee, tea, and milk. Please bring your own table service (plate, cup, silverware, napkins). There is a slop sink at the well you can use to wash them up before packing them away. The 4th of July Pancake Breakfast is on Saturday, July 4th from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. I will need volunteers to cook and serve as well as to set up and tear down.

On June 20th we will head to Michigan to Mud Lake Bog. Migration has passed and we have reached the summer birding doldrums so this will be more of a botany trip (okay, we may see a few birds). Our main goal on this trip is to see carnivorous plants. Mud Lake Bog is the best place in our area to see these plants because the boardwalk sits right on top of the bog. We will see pitcher plants and both sundews (round-leaved and spatulate-leaved). We may find some orchids blooming; last year we got lucky, and the orchids were blooming.

I strongly suggest wearing long sleeves and long pants because poison sumac may overhang the boardwalk in some places, but we will keep a careful eye out for it. Bring water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. There are no restrooms at the bog.

Meet at Mud Lake Bog, located at 905 E. Elm Valley Road in Buchanan, Michigan (https://maps.app.goo.gl/JDoCxgd4mXCWunZG6) at 8:30 a.m. This preserve is only about a 30–45-minute drive from South Bend.

You need not be a member to attend our field trips. Questions, contact Carol Goodall at [email protected].

The 5-7 pm, open to the public, family friendly event will be hosted on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at 2626 S. Gertrude Street, South Bend, 46614. The new Native Wildflower Garden will be planted in honor of the late Carole Riewe.

Carole lovingly cared for many spring time baby birds over decades. She served as the former director of the Rum Village Nature Center, for decades. "Carole worked as a bird rehabilitator and served as an inspiration to all young ecology activists like myself, " fondly recalls Diana Mendelsohn.

Many local ecology activists remember Carole's years of work to benefit the birds and Rum Village Park. To honor her memory the Native Wildflower garden will be planted at the Oak Savannah. The location, at the Oak Savannah, planted over a decade ago by City of South Bend Forester, Brent Thompson and crew, during the annual community Earth day celebration. Plants and seed will be planted. Bring a plant or seeds will be shared.

The event is being co- hosted by Diana Mendelsohn, Earth day South Bend and Garry Harrington, Director of the Rum Village Nature Center. Participants are asked to dress in layers, rain or shine the planting is planned. The planting site will be marked by the orange cones and the Earth flag. For additional details, contact Diana Mendelsohn, [email protected], or text 574.310-9428.
