๐Ÿš“๐Ÿฅซ THANK YOU, MISHAWAKA! ๐Ÿฅซ๐Ÿš“

The Mishawaka Police Department would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our amazing community for your generosity and support during last Saturday's Pack the Police Cruiser Food Drive at Kroger on Merrifield Avenue.

Because of your kindness and willingness to help others, we were able to deliver more than 630 pounds of food along with $200 in cash and gift card donations to the Mishawaka Food Pantry! โค๏ธ

These donations will help provide meals and support to local families and individuals in need throughout our community. Your generosity truly demonstrates what makes Mishawaka such a special place to live, work, and visit.

We would also like to thank our partners at Kroger for hosting this annual event and helping make it a success.

Together, we are making a differenceโ€”one donation at a time.

๐Ÿ‘ Thank you, Mishawaka, for showing the power of community!

Officer Corona had the privilege of participating in a Female Law Enforcement Officer Interview Panel at the Elkhart Area Career Center, where high school students had the opportunity to hear firsthand from women serving in the law enforcement profession.

Officer Corona alongside other female officers shared their personal experiences, discussed the rewards and challenges of the profession, and provided insight into balancing family life, work responsibilities, and the unique experiences of being a woman in law enforcement.

Officer Corona serves on the Uniform Division Road Patrol, Emergency Response Team, and Hiring and Recruiting Team. In addition, she is a Field Training Officer and Background Investigator. Throughout her career, she has gained extensive experience through assignments with the Major Crimes and Street Crimes Unit, bringing a diverse range of skills and expertise to the department. Officer Corona also has prior military experience and currently serves as a Sergeant First Class in the Indiana Army National Guard.

We are grateful to our female officers for sharing their experiences and serving as positive role models for the next generation in Law Enforcement.

Thank you to the Elkhart Area Career Center for hosting this meaningful event and providing students with the opportunity to learn about careers in public service.

๐Ÿšดโ˜€๏ธ SCHOOL'S OUT โ€“ RIDE SAFE, RIDE SMART! โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿšด

As we celebrate National E-Bike Day on May 30 and World Bicycle Day today, June 3, the Mishawaka Police Department encourages everyone to get outside and enjoy the many Mishawaka Parks, trails, sidewalks, neighborhoods, and roadways throughout our community this summer.

Whether you're riding a traditional bicycle, an e-bike, or exploring Mishawaka's beautiful Riverwalk and trail system, safety starts with understanding the laws and riding responsibly.

๐Ÿšฒ Know the Difference: Bicycle, E-Bike, or E-Moto?

Indiana law recognizes three classes of electric bicycles:

โœ… Class 1 E-Bike
โ€ข Pedal assist only
โ€ข No throttle
โ€ข Maximum assisted speed of 20 mph

โœ… Class 2 E-Bike
โ€ข Pedal assist and throttle-equipped
โ€ข Can operate without pedaling
โ€ข Maximum assisted speed of 20 mph

โœ… Class 3 E-Bike
โ€ข Pedal assist only
โ€ข No throttle
โ€ข Maximum assisted speed of 28 mph

All legal e-bikes must:
โœ” Have operable pedals
โœ” Have a motor rated at 750 watts or less
โœ” Display a manufacturer's label showing class, top assisted speed, and motor wattage

โš ๏ธ Not Every Electric Two-Wheel Vehicle is an E-Bike

If a vehicle does not meet Indiana's legal definition of an e-bike, it may be considered a motor vehicle or motorcycle.

Many electric motorcycles (commonly called "E-Motos") can exceed 50 mph and often have motors producing several thousand watts of power. These vehicles generally require:
โ€ข Driver's license
โ€ข Registration
โ€ข Insurance

A simple rule of thumb:
๐Ÿ‘‰ No pedals = likely a motorcycle
๐Ÿ‘‰ Pedals + meets Indiana e-bike requirements = e-bike

๐Ÿ›‘ Ride Responsibly & Respectfully
โ€ข Wear a helmet.
โ€ข Obey traffic signs and signals.
โ€ข Yield to pedestrians on sidewalks and trails.
โ€ข Keep speeds reasonable around others.
โ€ข Stay alert and avoid distractions.
โ€ข Use lights and reflective gear when riding at night.
โ€ข Respect other trail and roadway users.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Parents: Before purchasing an electric bike or electric motorcycle for your child, take time to understand Indiana law and ensure the vehicle is legal for where it will be operated.

Our goal is education, safety, and keeping everyone enjoying the outdoors responsibly this summer. Together, we can make Mishawaka streets, sidewalks, and trails safe and enjoyable for all.

๐Ÿšด Enjoy the ride.
๐Ÿค Respect others.
โš–๏ธ Know the law.
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Stay safe.

The Mishawaka Police Department would like to recognize and thank several outstanding community partners who recently came together to help build a new staircase platform that will assist our future officers in preparing for the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) physical fitness and agility testing, which will begin implementing this equipment in August 2026.

A huge thank you to Lowe's in Mishawaka for generously donating the hardware materials and to Zeeland Lumber and Supply Co. in Mishawaka for donating the treated lumber needed for the project.

We also want to recognize the incredible students and instructors from the Elkhart Area Career Center Construction Trades Program. After being provided with only a reference image and limited measurements, the students used their skills, creativity, and experience to develop a blueprint, create a materials list, and successfully construct a durable 5-step up-and-down platform that can easily be transported in three separate pieces.

Additionally, thank you to City of Mishawaka Central Services Division for allowing us to utilize one of their trucks and trailers to help transport the staircase platform.

Through the generosity, teamwork, and support of our local businesses, city departments, and educational partners, this project saved the Mishawaka Police Department over $1,000 while also creating a valuable hands-on learning opportunity for future building trades professionals.

This staircase platform will help future Mishawaka Police applicants and recruits better prepare for the academy and the physical demands of the law enforcement profession.

We are extremely grateful for the continued support from our community partners who continue investing in the future of public safety and our local workforce.

Thank you for making a difference in our community! ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ”จ๐Ÿชš๐Ÿ—๏ธ๐Ÿš“
