Our Adult Day Program was filled with smiles recently as we celebrated Mother’s Day with a beautiful tea party and spa day.
While the decorations were festive and the treats were delicious, there was some incredible "brain work" happening behind the scenes. These signature event social gatherings are a key to supporting cognitive health with social connectivity, reminiscence therapy, and sensory stimulation.

Recently, we challenged our clients to try something fresh or revisit a skill they haven't used in years. This tool-based task is a triple threat: it boosts hand-eye coordination, encourages problem-solving, and keeps cognitive engagement high. We had a blast!

The Adult Day Program is designed to provide care for your loved ones and also to support you the Caregivers. Our program offers Music Therapy, Art Therapy, Brain Games and more to clients plus Support Groups for our clients’ Caregivers.

If you or someone you know may benefit from the support of Mount of Olives Church’s Adult Day Program – please direct them to ADP.MOOCHURCH.ORG, or contact the Adult Day Program directly for more information – call 949-581-3800.

Happy Birthday - once again to all our May birthdays!

"Honor them for all that their hands have done, and let their works bring them praise at the city gate." - Proverbs 31:31

We had a blast celebrating Cinco de Mayo this month at our Adult Day Program, but the fun didn't stop at the decorations. These festive gatherings provide vital sensory stimulation—from the rhythmic sounds of the music to the vibrant colors of the crafts. Engaging the senses is a powerful way to spark memory recall and keep our seniors feeling connected and bright!

Often, caregivers don't understand the importance of filling their loved one's day with activities. It may seem like your loved ones need rest as they age. But they're just as capable of being bored and often need someone to help them to find a stimulating activity and encourage them to participate, especially as they struggle with fading memories.
At the Adult Day Program at Mount of Olives Church in Mission Viejo, we help keep our clients busy with fun and stimulating activities planned all throughout the day - like music, crafts, exercise and games.

Free Memory Assessments offered at our Dementia Caregiver Education Events!

The Adult Day Program at Mount of Olives Church is privileged to partner with
Global Alzheimer's Platform Foundation. This not for profit organization has expertise in nearly every area of neurology including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, mental health, Down Syndrome, TBI and stroke. Finding treatments and cures for neurodegenerative diseases requires multi-layered, diverse backgrounds of clinical research, and we believe we have assembled the best team to contribute to the field.

The memory assessment offered at our events is a short 1:1 screening done with a clinician. The test itself takes about 7-10 minutes, depending on the person.

Register to attend one of these free events on our website, and assessments are scheduled on a first come, first served basis from 8:00-11:30am the day of the events.

Dr. Aaron Ritter, Director of Memory & Cognitive Disorders Program at Hoag's Pickup Family Neurosciences Institute, suggests that dementia may best be understood as a problem of brain metabolism. Metabolism is how the brain turns food into energy and materials it needs to function. In dementia, key brain cells gradually lose this ability, leading to common symptoms that accompany dementia including fatigue, weight loss, irritability, and loss of interest in hobbies or exercise.

Join us for our free event where Dr. Ritter will speak in person about "Dementia Risk Reduction" as part of our 2026 Dementia Caregiver Education Series. Register for this free event at https://adp.moochurch.org

We exercise with our clients during 'Friendship Club,' because exercise might also have a positive impact on mental health:
- Some studies have shown that exercise might improve focus and attention.
- Giving more confidence and higher self-esteem.
- Providing opportunities to meet and talk with others. This can help maintain a sense of identity and prevent feeling isolated.
- Improving mood and symptoms of depression.

We love dancing and music at "Friendship Club"!
In a 2008 article in Scientific American magazine, a Columbia University neuroscientist posited that synchronizing music and movement—dance, essentially—constitutes a “pleasure double play.” Music stimulates the brain’s reward centers, while dance activates its sensory and motor circuits.
