A Memorial Day service and roll call was held at the Rio Grande Valley State Veteran Cemetery in Mission, Texas on May 25th at 9:00 a.m.

There were over 200 in attendance at the honor-driven ceremony that memorialized the 20 warriors laid to rest here on this sacred ground, but Memorial Day activities began long before that Monday morning.

The avenue of flags was lit all weekend with open access to the cemetery grounds 24 hours per day and the headstones of all those Killed in Action and Missing in Action were lit up in the darkness of night.

Hundreds of community members came during the night hours throughout the weekend to pay their respects to our fallen heroes as taps and "Amazing Grace" echoed in the darkness from the bell tower.

“Be silent and respectful here patriots rest.”

The Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery has upgraded their Bell Tower.

Borrowing an idea from the West Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Lubbock, it has been repainted and the bells themselves are a gorgeous gold color.

The color is called “ceremonial gold” and is quite an appropriate name as we work to honor our Veterans and their families!

Please check it out the next time you are at the cemetery.

We will always ensure that no Veteran is left behind. 🇺🇸

The GLO will proudly display this special collection of red dog tags for the 29 fallen heroes that the Texas VLB honored at Unaccompanied Veteran Burials across the state in 2025.

These dog tags will serve as a constant reminder of the sacrifices these brave Veterans made for our nation.

Commissioner Buckingham sends her thanks to the wonderful staff at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery, VLB staff, Veteran service groups, and community members who attend and make these services possible.
