City of Mission, KS - Government Where the heart of Johnson County intersects with the cool of Kansas City. But take a closer look, and you’ll see Mission is so much more.

At first glance, Mission is a charming small town, providing easy access to Kansas City and its suburbs. Mission is truly a Community for All Ages that, by design, attracts people regardless of whether they’re starting a career or winding it down, raising a family or emptying their nest. Valuing inclusivity and diversity, we welcome all people. We celebrate the connectivity that comes with knowing

your neighbors, your local leaders and the people with whom you do business. Supportive and safe, Mission is a walkable city with an eclectic mix of local merchants, convenient recreation facilities, neighborhood parks, bike paths and trails. Mission is where the heart of Johnson County intersects with the cool of Kansas City. More small town than suburb, we’re proud without being pretentious, progressive yet rooted in our history, growing but steadfast in our commitment to evolve in ways that are best for our people and our environment. Incorporated as a city in 1951, and true to our mid-century roots, we’re a no-frills, form-follows-function community, blending traditional values with the avant-garde and bringing together a multitude of people and perspectives to shape the future. We don’t like to brag, but if you ask, we’ll happily let you in on our secret: Mission has something for everyone.

🌟 Feel Good Friday! 🌟

We’re giving a big shoutout to Arvest Bank, who recently adopted a stretch of Shawnee Mission Parkway through our Adopt-A-Street program and completed their inaugural cleanup! 🧤🗑️

We can’t thank their team enough for volunteering their time and helping keep Mission beautiful, clean, and welcoming. 💚

Thank you for being a great community partner! 👏

WHAT’S CHANGING?

Did you know the 2024 Building Codes include new physical security provisions?

For certain new construction, Mission’s 2024 codes include enhanced security features such as:

🚪Reinforced doors
🪟Reinforced windows
🔒Reinforced locking mechanisms
💡Lighting at entryways

These updates are designed to incorporate additional security considerations into the building itself.

The 2024 Building Codes take effect October 1, 2026.

🌳 Grow Mission’s Canopy! 🌳

Mission has been a proud Tree City USA community since 2002, and our trees are an important part of what makes Mission a great place to live, work and grow. A healthy tree canopy provides shade, supports wildlife, improves air quality and helps create a more resilient community.

As we celebrate 75 years of Mission, we’re looking toward the next 75 with our Anniversary Tree Drive! 🌱

Residents AND non-residents are invited to purchase a tree at cost and help us continue growing Mission’s tree canopy. Whether you’re planting in your yard or simply looking for a way to celebrate our community, adding a tree is a gift that keeps growing for generations.

🗓️ Orders are available through September 26
🌳 Tree pickup: Powell Community Center, September 26, 9 a.m.–12 p.m.

Help us celebrate 75 years by planting something that can be enjoyed for many more. 💚
