Behind every restored stream, protected water right, and thriving fishery is a story. Tonight, those stories come to The Roxy Theater for an evening of films exploring the challenges, science, and stewardship shaping the future of water across Montana.

The Water Keepers and Stories of Water Across the Landscape brings together three short films highlighting Tribal water rights, stream restoration, and innovative efforts to protect native fish populations across western Montana. The evening will feature the award-nominated documentary The Water Keepers, along with Restoring Resiliency: The Miller Creek Story, and A Life Saving Fish Screen for Lolo Creek.

The Missoula Conservation District helped fund and produce "Restoring Resiliency: The Miller Creek Story."

Following the screening, stick around for a Q&A with filmmakers and producers to learn more about the people and partnerships behind these stories.

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than to know that 17 teams made up of high school students across the state came together this week to compete in the Montana Envirothon, a competition that tests these teams' knowledge of rangelands, soils, aquatics, wildlife and forestry, and tasks each team with solving a current issue and creating an oral presentation. Many students who have participated in Envirothon competitions have pursued degrees and careers in natural resource conservation.
The Missoula CD was proud to sponsor five teams, and we are thrilled to announce that one of the two Big Sky High School teams won 1st place overall, one of the two Sentinel teams placed 2nd overall, AND the Missoula FFA team placed 3rd overall! Congratulations to ALL the competitors: this is a two-day intensive competition, and these students prepare for months for this competition.
The winning team now has the opportunity to compete in the NCF International Envirothon that will take place in July in balmy Mississippi!

A HUGE shoutout to their coaches: Brandon Honzel, Lindsay Manzo, and Heidi West!! We ❤️you!👏

The Missoula Conservation District has an MOU with the Missoula Back Country Horsemen to help share resources and promote more sustainable and resource-friendly horsekeeping practices. Through this work, we have made a relationship with many members of the BCHA. Smoke Elser is a living legend and a kind man who gives his all to teach conservation to the youth of Montana. Eva is a brilliant educator who has captured Smoke's stories in their book, Hush of the Land, plus she has many stories of her own. Catch this event if you can.

This week!

The Missoula Area Chamber of Commerce's Forest Resources Committee invites the public to attend the third and final 2026 Forest Conversations event on Wednesday, March 11, from 6:00–7:30 p.m., featuring a discussion on tribal perspectives on forest management with members of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe’s Forestry and Fire and Tribal Relations Divisions. March’s conversation will be led by:

Katie McDonald, CSKT Tribal Relations Specialist
Kaylie Durglo, Reserved Treaty Rights Land (RTRL) Project Coordinator

The evening’s presentations and conversations, hosted on the ancestral lands of the Salish and Kootenai people, will explore the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ approaches to coordination and restoration, and cultural perspectives about our native forests from river bottoms to high elevation species.

This event is free and open to the public, and complimentary non-alcoholic beverages will be provided.

The Forest Conversations series is co-hosted by the Missoula Area Chamber of Commerce’s Forest Resources Committee and the Missoula Conservation District and is designed to foster community dialogue around forest stewardship, science, and management in western Montana.

Our partners in conservation at the Ecology Project International were not only kind enough to have our Executive Director, Rad Watkins, speak on river conservation, helping to spread our message, but their staff also made a blog about what they learned. Thank you, EPI. Check it out!

Healthy rivers don’t happen by accident. In this webinar recap, Rad Watkins explains how forested watersheds and thriving riparian zones prevent flooding, reduce erosion, filter pollutants, and protect water quality. Learn why native vegetation along riverbanks is essential—and how simple human ...
