Why is Missoula PD turning off comments on an official government page? When public agencies use Facebook to communicate with the public, the First Amendment doesn’t disappear. Silencing the community isn’t public safety—it’s censorship.

A First Amendment complaint with the ACLU of Montana or contact Knight First Amendment Institute.

Just before 06:30 this morning, Missoula Police Department officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 2000 block of Cooper Street. Upon arrival, officers located a 30-year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds to the torso. Officers immediately initiated life-saving measures, including wound packing and other trauma care techniques, until emergency medical services arrived. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Shortly after the initial response, Missoula County Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle believed to be connected to the incident. The occupants of the vehicle were detained without incident.

At this time, all individuals involved have been accounted for, and Missoula Police Department detectives are actively conducting interviews. No arrests have been made at this stage in the preliminary investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional information is urged to contact Detective Ethan Smith at (406) 552-6335.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further updates will be provided as appropriate.

Brand new book by civil rights lawyer Alec Karakatsanis, founder of the Civil Rights Corps.

Drawing from his experience challenging systemic injustices in the U.S. legal system, Karakatsanis introduces the concept of “copaganda”—a form of propaganda where police, prosecutors, and media collaborate to shape public perception.

He argues that this alliance promotes fear of crime, particularly crimes associated with marginalized communities, while diverting attention from systemic issues like wage theft, environmental harm, and inadequate social services . 

Karakatsanis contends that copaganda distorts reality by overemphasizing certain crimes and underreporting others, thereby justifying increased policing and incarceration.

He critiques media practices that uncritically disseminate law enforcement narratives, contributing to a culture of fear and inequality. The book calls for a reevaluation of how news is reported and urges investment in community-based solutions to address the root causes of crime.

Kudos to the cops for another arrest without anyone getting hurt.

Last night, the Missoula Police Department, in collaboration with Missoula County Sheriff's Office and Thurston County Sheriff's Office (Olympia, WA), successfully apprehended Jeffrey Zizz, a 47-year-old Washington resident, in the 3900 block of Brooks St.

Following information received from Thurston County Sheriff's Office, indicating Zizz's possible presence in our area, MPD SWAT and Patrol units swiftly responded. With the deployment of flash sound diversionary devices, Zizz was safely taken into custody. He has since been remanded at the Missoula County Detention Facility for his outstanding warrant.

We greatly appreciate the collaborative efforts of all involved agencies in ensuring the safety and security of our community.

“Incident” They’re vaguebooking

The Missoula Police Department is currently responding to an active incident in the 1700 block of Cooley St. near Turner. Due to a heavy police presence, we are asking the public to avoid the area. Residents in the immediate vicinity are advised to shelter in place for safety.

If anyone in the area requires medical attention, please call 911.
