Join us on Friday, September 25 at the UC Theater for a Mansfield Dialogue with journalist Paul Richter. Richter will explore the struggle of Japanese immigrants who came to America seeking opportunity but encountered exclusion, violence, and discrimination. Drawing from his new book, "The Distance Between Our Names", Richter will share intimate stories of resilience, dignity, and resistance and the lessons for immigration, belonging, and American identity today. This program is funded by the "The Norman Y. Mineta Japanese American Confinement Education (JACE) program of the National Parks Service". Co-sponsored by the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula in honor of their preservation of the Alien Detention Center, which wrongfully held 1,000 Japanese residents from 1941-1944.

Montana high school teachers: Bring your students to the 2026 Civics Forum!

On October 13, the Mansfield Center will welcome approximately 250 students from across Western Montana to the University of Montana for a day of engaging speakers, hands-on workshops, and connection with peers.

This year’s theme, Shaping Tomorrow: Ballots & Beyond, will invite students to explore voting, leadership, civic participation, and the many ways they can help shape their communities and democracy.

Applications for the Spring and Fall 2027 YSEALI Academic Fellows Program are now OPEN!

We invite young leaders from Southeast Asia between the ages of 18 and 25 to apply for this five-week, fully funded academic exchange to the United States. Fellows build practical skills, gain direct experience with American enterprise and innovation, and forge lasting ties between Southeast Asia and the United States.

Fellows study one of four YSEALI themes: Economic Prosperity; Liberty and Freedom; Natural Resources; or Peace and Security.
