When in doubt, stay out! As water temperatures rise, Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) can form in any standing body of water.

HABs are an overgrowth of cyanobacteria and appear as “pea soup”, “grass clippings”, or “spilled paint” and are usually suspended in the water or floating on the surface in a mat. The bloom can be many colors including green, blue, gold, or red. HABs occur throughout Montana in standing freshwater such as lakes, reservoirs, stock ponds, eddies in slow moving water, roadside ditches, etc. Some types of cyanobacteria can produce toxins that can pose serious health risks to humans and animals if toxins are contacted or ingested. This is not the same as the algae or vegetation seen clinging to rocks in local rivers and not all algal blooms are harmful – but when it doubt, stay out.

For more information on HABs, including how to report see video below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xg509p24lAQ&t=9s
