Clark Fork Coalition

Clark Fork Coalition The Coalition believes that community vitality and watershed health are inextricably linked.

Founded in 1985, the Clark Fork Coalition protects and restores the Clark Fork River—Montana's largest river by volume—and its tributaries, employing science-backed strategies to protect the best and restore the rest. Founded in 1985, the Clark Fork Coalition is dedicated to protecting and restoring the Clark Fork River watershed, a 22,000-square-mile area draining western Montana and northern Ida

📣🏔️Calling all Missoulians—share your opinions on tourism impacts!

Destination Missoula (Visit Missoula!), Missoula's destination marketing organization, is conducting their annual survey gauging how residents feel about tourism in our community—its benefits, impacts, challenges and opportunities. Released in an annual report by UM's Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research (ITRR), this data offers valuable insight into the perspectives of everyday Missoulians and helps inform local planning decisions that aim to balance area tourism and recreation with quality of life for residents and ecosystems. (Past reports are available on ITRR's website—link in comments.)

Thank you in advance for adding your voice to this important community temp check! 🙌

As you may have heard, the State of Montana recently updated its fish consumption advisory for some water bodies based on new data confirming the presence of PFAS in fish tissue. PFAS are a class of chemicals linked to cancers and other serious health risks. The State's testing found PFAS in fish tissue, and the new advisory adds PFAS to the list of contaminants found in fish in the Clark Fork River. However, the overall picture of where fish should be avoided hasn't changed much.

For those who like to keep fish caught in the Clark Fork River, the takeaways are:

👉 Everyone should avoid eating any fish caught in the Clark Fork River from its confluence with the Bitterroot River downstream to the confluence with the Flathead River.

👉 Women of child-bearing age and children should avoid eating rainbow trout in the Clark Fork River between its confluence with the Blackfoot and its confluence with the Bitterroot.

👉 Upstream of the Blackfoot, it is recommended that individuals limit the number of fish they eat from the Clark Fork River.

For more details, read the full updated Montana Sportfish Consumption Guidelines found here: https://fwp.mt.gov/binaries/content/assets/fwp/fish/montana-sport-fish-consumption-guidelines-final-4.21.26.pdf.

A lot of what goes into restoration happens after the big equipment leaves.

Out at Fifer Gulch near Anaconda, final touches have gone in—including seeding along the newly restored stream and wetland areas. Last week, CFC’s Restoration Project Manager, Gretchen Watkins, was out on-site hand-spreading a riparian seed mix along the banks. The larger-seeded species in this mix can’t be run through a standard broadcast spreader, so they’re placed by hand for more accurate coverage in the wetter, more variable soils along the channel.

Our Big Sky Watershed Corps Member, Zoe Transtrum, was also on-site using a broadcast spreader for the smaller upland seed mix, helping cover the larger areas surrounding the stream channel.

Together, these seed mixes include floodplain-adapted bunch grasses and species like western yarrow, which supports pollinators and does well in streamside conditions. It’s a small but important step in stabilizing soils and helping vegetation take hold across the site.

This project—led by the George Grant Chapter of Trout Unlimited —re-meandered Fifer Gulch and a nearby spring creek, reconnected the floodplain, and created new wetland and fish habitat just outside of town. Over the past few months, staff and volunteers also collected and planted more than 10,000 willows to help anchor it all in place.

This community showed up for the Clark Fork watershed during Missoula & Bitterroot Gives—and that support translates into very real work on the ground.

Restoring streambanks. Reconnecting habitat. Securing water in tributaries. Defending clean water protections so they remain in place for the long haul.

It’s not abstract—and it’s not finished.

Thank you for being part of it.
