Missoula Helitack Earns Short-Haul Certification

The Lolo National Forest’s Missoula Helitack crew has officially completed the rigorous Forest Service Short-Haul Certification joining an elite group, one of only seven Forest Service helitack crews nationwide with short-haul capabilities. After several intensive weeks of training, the entire crew is now fully qualified.

Short-haul operations use a fixed line suspended beneath a helicopter to transport personnel into areas inaccessible by traditional means. This highly specialized method allows firefighters and medical responders to be lowered directly into rugged, remote terrain where they can take immediate action, including wildfire suppression or emergency medical care.

Trails crews began work on the Heart Lake Trail on the Superior Ranger District where significant blowdown occurred from the December 2025 wind event. Crews worked to clear approximately 200 trees and several large boulder debris that were blocking the trail.

Lolo National Forest Trail Crews and partners will continue to prioritize our most popular hiking trails but all users should be prepared for some blocked trails and plan accordingly before heading out. Be mindful of areas of blowdown and please recreate safely. The public is encouraged to call their local Ranger District to report trail conditions.

We appreciate your patience as we continue to clear roads and trails across the forest.
