PSA: A tuna can is not an acceptable hack for a DIY electrical project. (Yes, this is a real photo that a Missoula County building inspector took a few years ago).

If you're planning a construction or home renovation project this spring, make sure you have what you need by visiting https://www.missoulacounty.build/, which has a step-by-step guide to building permits issued by the Missoula County Public Works and Planning, Development and Sustainability departments. Some permits are also reviewed by Missoula Public Health for environmental health and sanitation purposes, too.

This process applies to properties in Missoula County but outside of city limits. City residents can find permitting information by contacting the City of Missoula Development Services department at https://www.ci.missoula.mt.us/1258/Development-Services

Welcome to Missoula County Public Works, Jason!

Missoula County has chosen Jason Mitchell as its new Public Works director. Mitchell will oversee all Missoula County Public Works operations, including the Building and Road and Bridge divisions, Surveyors Office, the four sewer and water systems under county jurisdiction and the Seeley Lake Refuse District.

Mitchell, who starts March 31, comes to Missoula County with more than 15 years of experience in public works, facilities management and capital project oversight. He most recently served as director of facilities, health and safety for Engie, a multinational corporation specializing in low-carbon energy and services. He managed a $22 million budget, led large scale capital improvement projects and managed a large fleet of service vehicles in that role.

Mitchell has also served in the public sector as an engineering project manager for the Town of Jackson, Wyoming, as construction superintendent for the Missoula Housing Authority, and as a technology specialist for Missoula County 9-1-1.

Mitchell will replace current Public Works Director Shane Stack, who will retire in June after serving in the public sector for 30 years, first at the Montana Department of Transportation, then at Missoula County.

Great information that Missoula County, Montana - Government posted for our county residents and those that use county maintained roadways!

How does Missoula County Public Works determine which roads to plow?

Road crews begin plowing roads outside city limits between 5 and 6 a.m. following a snowstorm based on priority. All plowing is based out of two locations – one in Missoula near the Wye, and one in Seeley Lake near the airport. Missoula County divides the roads and streets under its jurisdiction into Priority 1 and Priority 2 routes for snow plowing.

Priority 1 routes are determined by multiple factors, including:

• school bus routes and school locations
• public transportation routes
• traffic volumes
• steepness and grade of the road
• areas that receive more snowfall, or are prone to drifts

Priority 2 routes are all remaining roads and streets, such as cul-de-sacs and lower volume residential streets.

During an on-going snowstorm, Priority 1 routes may be plowed and sanded multiple times before Priority 2 routes are addressed.

Priority 2 routes will be plowed and sanded once the primary routes remain in adequate condition. Click on this interactive map to see the routes: https://gis.missoulacounty.us/PropertyInformation/?theme=snowplow #

Please keep in mind that while Public Works is responsible for plowing roads throughout of the county, the City of Missoula plows within city limits. The Montana Department of Transportation plows highways like U.S. 93 and I-90.
