FBISD BOT Approves 10 day COVID leave for all staff.

Great news! Although, the FBISD lawyers insist that mask mandates are illegal ( working on that challenge), the Board of Trustees tonight did vote to increase COVID sick leave to 10 days and it will be retro active to the beginning of the school year. Thank you, Angie Hanan, for making the motion for the leave increase and for supporting our teacher and staff. Thanks to all Board Members who worked through the language to ensure that our teachers and staff are covered.

We are very tired but excited that the Fort Bend ISD BOT voted to mandate mask for all students and staff. Thanks to all the members that came out to support this effort and special thanks to Michelle Menon who made a strong and heartfelt speech asking for the BOT to protect her and her students. Also thank you to Jim Rice, Angie Hanan, Dr Shirley Rose-Gilliam, and Denetta Williams for siding with safety and doing the right thing.

Now we work on enforcement , on COVID leave days, on testing to avoid forced quarantines, and on stringent COVID cleaning protocols for Buses and classrooms. These safety issue will continue to be our objective in order to keep students and staff safe .

“Every student in Fort Bend ISD deserves a safe learning environment, and every worker - teachers, paraprofessionals, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, all of us - deserves a safe working environment.

We’re disappointed that our leadership in Fort Bend ISD have decided to ignore the concerns of the community and the safety of our kids.”

- Fort Bend Employee Federation President Glenda Macal

Thank you to all Houston-area leaders coming together and representing our future. With hospitals filling up due to COVID-19 cases, a mask mandate should be immediately implemented to keep our children and staff safe. The delta variant is spreading quicker than expected and this gives us more reason to receive vaccinations and a mask mandate. Thank you to

Fort Bend AFT proudly and enthusiastically endorses and supports Addie Heyliger and Ashish Agrawal for Fort Bend ISD School Board Trustee .

Addie is a strong supporter of Student and Teacher values . She was instrumental in getting Vaccines to the Smart Financial Center for Fort Bend personnel as well as mobile vaccine units to the schools. She listens to teacher issues and ask hard questions that support issues that support teachers’ ability to be effective. She supports para-professionals and support personnel who support teachers and students. She is in the community helping neighborhoods in need and in the schools providing books and supplies to at risk students . She is a true advocate.

Ashish is a business man who has creative ideas that support community engagement in the schools. He proposes to create a community forum to listen to the community, parents and teachers to better serve the educational needs of the students . He is involved with several minority groups and has his finger on the pulse of the at-risk community to make school better for all students .

Please join me in voting for these two exemplary candidates.

Hurricane Harvey has affected all of us in Fort Bend and in our surrounding communities. If our homes were not directly affected, we all no doubt have family or friends who have. As such it is time to come together to help in the recovery efforts of our fellow colleagues. AFT has been calling and checking on each one of our members to determined what are the specific needs of our member. We have members who were evacuated and are still not in their homes. We have members who need food for their families. And there are members who have lost everything. So here are some of the ways you can help in the recovery efforts for our members and their families. Come to the AFT office on Saturday, September 2, 20176 to help collect and organize supplies needed for our members. Come by the AFT office and drop off any supplies and monitary donations. Volunteer to help members who have lost everything to clean up and start rebuilding . We will be at the Fort Bend AFT office starting 9:00AM on Saturday and continue until we need to. Glenda Macal, our Fort Bend AFT Vice President, is coordinating this effort. Please call her at 713.447.1470 to schedule a time to come in or to volunteer to help with the clean up for some of our members. 12621 W.
