You might see fire trucks or ambulances from a neighboring community responding in our area, that’s mutual aid in action. 🚑🚒

Fire and EMS agencies work together to make sure help arrives quickly, no matter where an emergency happens.

Why it matters:

• Some calls require more people and equipment than one department has

• If our crews are already on other calls, nearby agencies step in

• We return the favor when they need help

• We train together, so responses run smoothly and efficiently

Mutual aid means you’re never relying on just one department, it’s a network working together to keep the entire community safer.

Did you know the Mitchell Fire Department has a junior firefighter program?

We have a great group of dedicated junior firefighters!

Our junior firefighters assist senior firefighters at other community events and training events throughout the year.

As junior firefighters of the MFD, young men and women learn the skills and values associated with the long standing tradition of junior firefighters.

If you're 15-17 years of age and live in the MFD area or have a teenager that wants to do something with the community, come down and meet these young heroes and learn about what they do.

Stop by the firehouse (Station #1 or Station #2) on Wednesday evenings from 6pm-8pm for further details or call the station Mon- Fri 7am- 3pm.

See you at the firehouse!

30 years ago, you had about 17 minutes to escape a house fire.

Today, it’s often just 3-4 minutes. ⏰

Why the difference? Modern homes are filled with synthetic materials that burn faster, hotter, and produce more toxic smoke. In testing by Underwriters Laboratories, a room with modern furnishings was fully engulfed in under 3 minutes, compared to over 30 minutes for a room with older, natural materials.

That means less time to react and a greater risk from toxic smoke, which is the leading cause of death in house fires. 🔥

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼:

• Install smoke alarms on every level and in sleeping areas

• Test them monthly and replace them every 10 years

• Have a home escape plan with two ways out of every room

• Practice it so everyone knows what to do

Preparation makes the difference. Three minutes goes fast, but a plan can save lives. ⏰ 🚒

🚒 When the call goes out, no department stands alone. 🚒

You may hear the term “mutual aid” when emergency resources respond across jurisdictional lines.

Mitchell firefighters regularly respond to assist other communities throughout our region, and they do the same for us. We assist many agencies on both sides of the river (featured in this post are just a few examples).

Mutual aid is an important partnership between neighboring fire departments. It allows agencies to support each other during large or complex incidents.

It is a critical safety net.

Mutual aid is how we make sure our community gets the help it needs, no matter the size or scope of the emergency.

Whether it’s a structure fire, medical call, or large-scale incident, departments work side by side, sharing resources, equipment, and expertise to get the job done.

That means both giving and receiving support. It’s a system built on trust, coordination, and a shared commitment to protecting lives and property.

Because when it matters most, it’s not about boundaries, it’s about backing each other up.

Our regional partners are valued professionals, and we work closely with them every day.

✔️ Strong partnerships make everyone safer.

✔️ There’s strength in numbers.

✔️ Mutual aid is an important tool.

We remain committed to working alongside our regional partners to serve the Mitchell Fire Protection District and the surrounding region safely and effectively.
