The City of Mitchell understands that our cemetery is a place of deep, personal meaning for families, friends, and loved ones. Recent questions and concerns about cemetery rules have prompted us to provide this explanation to ensure clarity for everyone who visits a gravesite.
Concerns raised by citizens:
-Removal of certain decorations
-Seasonal clean-up schedules
-Enforcement of long-standing rules that may not have been consistently applied in the past
We hear and understand these concerns. These rules have been in place for years, but as we transition to a contract mowing crew, consistent enforcement becomes necessary to keep the grounds safe and well-maintained
How the city is responding:
-Improve communication to remind families what is allowed and when cleanups occur.
-Providing advance notice before seasonal cleanups, as clearly stated in the current cemetery rules.
-When mowing is done in a single day, the cemetery has a clean, uniform appearance. Families do not see half-mowed sections or uneven progress throughout the week. It creates a more respectful, well-kept look.
We recognize that every item placed at a gravesite carries an emotional significance. Our goal is to treat all families with respect and maintain a peaceful, dignified cemetery.
