🚑 Mitchellville Fire Department – July 2026 Monthly Call Update 🚒

July was another month of dedicated service for the members of Mitchellville Fire Department as we continued answering the call whenever our community needed us.

Every month tells a different story, but the overall trend remains the same our department is responding to more emergencies than ever before. Through the first seven months of 2026, we've experienced a 24% increase in call volume compared to last year, a reflection of both our growing community and the increasing demand placed on your fire department. No matter the hour or the emergency, our members stand ready to answer the call.

The accomplishments highlighted this month from the final inspection of A573 to the continued progress on B587 are a testament to what can be accomplished through teamwork and a shared commitment to our community. Our team invested more than 250 hours into the B587 project, completing the installation of emergency lighting, sirens, communications equipment, and other emergency equipment entirely in-house. By utilizing the skills and dedication of our own personnel, Mitchellville Fire Department has saved local taxpayers an estimated $44,000 in labor costs based on average emergency vehicle upfitting shop rates in Iowa.

We are incredibly proud of the dedication our members continue to demonstrate and equally grateful for the unwavering support of our department leadership, City Council, and City Administration. Their continued investment in our personnel, training, and equipment combined with the countless hours donated by our members ensures Mitchellville Fire Department remains prepared to meet the needs of our community today while building an even stronger department for the future.

🚑 A573 Update

July marked a historic milestone for our department as members traveled to Jefferson, North Carolina, to complete the final inspection of our brand-new Ambulance 573. Following a thorough inspection, we're pleased to report that all cosmetic concerns were addressed, with the remaining minor items scheduled for completion before delivery. The ambulance has since moved on for final graphics installation, assembly, and additional quality control.

We are excited to share that A573 remains on schedule for delivery in late August or early September, bringing nearly three years of planning and hard work to the finish line. We can't wait to place this new ambulance into service for the citizens of Mitchellville and Beaver Township.

🚒 B587 Update

Progress also continues on our new Brush 587. Installation of the emergency lighting, siren, communications equipment, and other emergency equipment has now been completed. We are currently working to schedule the installation of the final graphics package with a vendor in Ankeny.

Once the graphics have been installed, we'll be ready to officially unveil Brush 587 to the community. We are incredibly excited to share this project with everyone after months of planning and countless hours of work by our members. Stay tuned the reveal is coming soon!

Today concluded our inspection of the new A573 at the AEV facility in Jefferson, North Carolina.

We are pleased to report that all previously identified cosmetic defects were corrected while we were on-site, and our team visually confirmed each repair before departing.

During today's inspection, we did identify several additional minor to moderate issues within the patient compartment. These items have been documented, and AEV has assured us they will be addressed promptly, well before the ambulance is delivered.

With our inspection now complete, A573's next stop will be Columbia, Missouri, where it will undergo final assembly, graphics installation, and additional quality control measures before making its way home to Mitchellville.

In addition to the inspection, our team had the opportunity to tour AEV's state-of-the-art manufacturing facility and spend time with many of their employees. The hospitality shown throughout our visit was truly remarkable. Seeing an ambulance begin as a bare chassis and raw materials before being transformed into a life-saving vehicle that will serve communities across the nation was an incredible experience and gave us an even greater appreciation for the craftsmanship and dedication that goes into every build.

Most importantly, our team made it home safely, and we look forward to sharing more updates as A573 moves closer to joining our fleet. Delivery remains on schedule for late August to early September.

Thank you to everyone who has followed this project over the past several years. We know the community is just as excited as we are to see A573 placed into service.

Today, members of the Mitchellville Fire Department and Mitchellville Firefighters Association began the inspection process of our new Ambulance 573 (A573). As previously shared, this ambulance has been a long-awaited addition to our fleet and is currently being completed by AEV in Jefferson, North Carolina.

Today's inspection focused on the exterior of the ambulance. Every aspect of the vehicle was carefully evaluated, including the paint and finish, compartment doors, door alignment, weather seals, wheels and tires, front and rear glass, headlights, turn signals, hazard lights, emergency warning lights, and scene lighting. Our goal is to ensure the ambulance meets the quality, safety, and performance standards our community deserves.

Overall, the inspection has gone very well. However, no new emergency vehicle leaves the factory completely free of defects. During today's inspection, several minor cosmetic issues were identified. Our sales representative from American Response Vehicles (ARV) has already assured us these items will be corrected before the ambulance is accepted.

While cosmetic imperfections may seem insignificant to some, this ambulance represents a substantial investment made possible through taxpayer and township funding. We have a responsibility to ensure every detail no matter how small is addressed before the vehicle is placed into service. Accepting anything less than the quality our community paid for would not be in the best interest of those we serve.

Tomorrow, our inspection continues with a comprehensive evaluation of the interior, including fit and finish, cabinetry, equipment mounting, patient compartment functionality, the cab, and under-hood mechanical components.

Tomorrow, we'll also share additional photos from the inspection. For now, here are a few snapshots from today's progress as we continue working toward bringing A573 home to serve the Mitchellville community.

Mitchellville Fire would like to recognize Firefighter/Paramedic Alexa Braun as she continues to expand her knowledge and skills by attending Firefighter I at Camp Dodge with the Fire Service Training Bureau.

While Alexa already serves our community as a paramedic, as well as working full time with our friends at Bondurant Emergency Services! She has chosen to further her training by pursuing her Firefighter I certification. This commitment reflects the dedication and professionalism our members bring to the department and to the citizens we serve.

Our training never stops in the fire service. Every class attended, every skill practiced, and every certification earned helps ensure we're prepared to answer the next call with confidence and competence.

Please join us in wishing Alexa the best of luck as she completes Firefighter I. Alexa we are so proud of you as your continue to put our communities first and look forward to you achiving all your goals!

** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE **

On July 20th, at approximately 11:50 a.m., the Polk County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting an appliance fire inside a residence in Mitchellville. Based on information received from the caller, visible conditions as crews departed the station, the incident was immediately upgraded to a First Alarm, bringing additional FIRE and EMS resources from neighboring communities.

Engine 571 responded with a crew of four personnel. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire showing from the Bravo side of the structure. Crews initiated a defensive fire attack utilizing a pre-connected 1¾-inch crosslay before transitioning to a coordinated transitional fire attack. Once conditions improved, firefighters safely transitioned to an offensive interior attack.

Firefighters from Altoona Engine 251 completed a primary search of the residence, confirming that all occupants had safely evacuated prior to crews entering the structure. There were no civilian injuries.

One firefighter was transported to a local area hospital due to heat exhaustion and has since been released and is resting and recovering at home.

Today's incident serves as another reminder of the value of strong mutual aid partnerships. We are incredibly grateful to all of the departments and agencies that responded to assist. Working together allows us to provide the highest level of service to our community when it matters most.

We would also like to recognize those who helped care for our firefighters throughout the incident.

A heartfelt thank you to Casey's General Store, Dollar General and Kwikstar for generously donating water, gatorade and ice to help keep our crews hydrated while operating in the summer heat.

Thank you to former Mayor Jessica (Todd) Trobaugh, and Councilwoman Morgan Lunn for bringing by additional refreshments and for thinking of all crews during a busy afternoon. Your support is sincerely appreciated.

Finally, thank you to the Mitchellville Firefighters Association for delivering refreshments, and your continued dedication to supporting our firefighters.

Water System Information

During suppression operations, firefighters utilized the fire hydrant located at the intersection of Center Avenue S and Carter Street SW briefly as the primary water supply. Throughout the incident, crews flowed approximately 4,000 gallons of water from the municipal water system, along with an additional 2,000 gallons of water supplied from apparatus tank water and water shuttle operations.

Following a fire of this nature, residents in the immediate area may notice temporary water discoloration. This is a common occurrence caused by changes in water flow within the distribution system, which can disturb naturally occurring mineral sediment inside water mains. While the water may appear discolored for a short time, there are no lasting effects to the municipal water system as a result of fire suppression operations conducted on July 20, 2026.

Today, members of Mitchellville Fire Rescue had the privilege of spending a few hours with our neighbors in Jasper County.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Colfax Fire Department, Colfax Police Department, Jasper County Sheriff's Office, and everyone involved for hosting an outstanding event at the Jasper County Fair. We truly appreciate the invitation to be part of such a great day.

A special thank you to the Colfax Fire Department, Mingo Fire Department and Newton Fire Department for putting on an excellent tractor rollover demonstration featuring a trapped victim (a training dummy of course) and live extrication. It was an educational and well executed demonstration that highlighted the importance of training, teamwork, and preparedness.

Days like today remind us why strong mutual aid partnerships matter. They strengthen relationships, build lasting friendships, and create the trust that allows us to work seamlessly together when our communities need us most.

Mitchellville Fire Rescue is incredibly grateful for each of our mutual aid partners who never hesitate to answer the call. We are proud to stand alongside you in service to the citizens of our communities.
