🏆⚾ Mize baseball sits atop its respective classification for the first time since 2003! 🐾💙

Behind dominant pitching performances from junior Holder McAlpin in Game 1 and senior Trey Myers in Game 2, the Bulldogs swept East Webster 3-0 and 2-0 to capture the MHSAA Class 2A State Championship Series at Trustmark Park on Friday, May 22, 2026.

Head coach Justin Ainsworth, who was a player on the Bulldogs’ last championship team in 2003, now brings another state title back to Mize after a 23-year drought.

“Being where you’re from, it’s a lot of pressure,” said Ainsworth. “John King, our superintendent, and Evan Gordon, my principal, gave me this opportunity and believed in us. I’m super excited, and I couldn’t be prouder of our group of guys.

“I won it as a player, and 23 years later, I win it as a coach. We played in three state championship games when I was the head coach at Wayne Academy. I got the silver medallion then, so I guess it was finally time for me to get a gold medallion. I got to win a state championship with my son, and I couldn’t ask for more.”

Holder McAlpin was named MVP of the series after tossing a complete-game no-hitter in Game 1 on Thursday evening. McAlpin also recorded a hit in Game 2.

Trey Myers delivered another complete-game performance in Game 2 on Friday, allowing just five hits while striking out five. Together, the Bulldogs’ pitching staff combined for two shutouts in the championship series.

“We tried to keep East Webster off balance,” said Ainsworth. “We tried to throw fastballs for strikes when we could. I thought we battled well on the mound, which our pitching has been great all season.”

When asked what made the Bulldogs so dominant in the championship series, Ainsworth praised the team’s chemistry.

“These guys battle together,” said Ainsworth. “They come together as a team. We’ve faced some adversity, and it brought us closer together.”

Mize scored just five total runs in the series — three in the fourth inning of Game 1 and two in the second inning of Game 2 — but the Bulldogs’ pitching proved to be more than enough.

“Our pitching staff is jam up,” said Ainsworth. “Our pitchers got a lot of work as sophomores and Trey as a junior last year. Our pitching coach, Coach Drew Robbins, does a great job working with our guys. We tried not to throw them a whole lot before Spring Break, then stretched them out after Spring Break.”

Trey Myers led the Bulldogs offensively in the series with three hits.

🐾⚾️ BULLDOGS ARE TRUSTMARK PARK BOUND FOR THE CLASS 2A TITLE SERIES!!! 🐾⚾️

Following the conclusion of Game 2 on Monday night, Mize head baseball coach Justin Ainsworth addressed his team with a statement he’d been waiting to say all season: “We’re one win away from going to Trustmark Park.”

On Tuesday night, in the deciding game of the Class 2A South State Championship Series, the Bulldogs made that dream a reality.

Mize punched its ticket to Trustmark Park in dramatic fashion, knocking off No. 1 Clarkdale 5-4 in eight innings to capture the South State title and advance to the Class 2A Championship Series for the first time since 2003.

“Our guys battled all season,” said Ainsworth. “We had a lot of adversity and injuries to overcome. We wanted to get to a Game 3 against Clarkdale because we felt like [once we did that] we had a chance.”

Tied 4-4 in the eighth inning Tuesday night at Clarkdale, sophomore Parker Himmel reached base on a single to start the top frame. Himmel stole second base, then reached third on a passed ball, where he remained with two outs in the inning.

“I’m not going to lie, it crossed my mind to steal home,” said Ainsworth. “He and Himmel talked about it for a while there at third base, but I talked myself out of it.”

Down to his final strike with two outs, junior Hendrix Magee — who belted a three-run homer in the first inning to give Mize a 4-0 lead — delivered once again.

After fouling off four straight pitches to stay alive in the count, Magee lined a single to center field that scored Himmel from third to give the Bulldogs the go-ahead run.

“I’ve been asking him to have a two-strike approach all season,” said Ainsworth. “He’s a swing for the fence guy, but he had one of the best two-strike approaches I’ve seen all season.”

Magee wasn’t done delivering for Mize — in relief on the mound, Magee punched out the side on three strikeouts to send Mize to Trustmark Park.

“Magee was gusty last night,” added Ainsworth. “He struck out the side for us. I’m thankful for him and his performance.”

Senior southpaw Trey Myers started the game for the Bulldogs, tossing five complete innings with four strikeouts while allowing just three earned runs on three hits and one walk.

“We call him ‘The Captain,’” said Justin Ainsworth. “Trey is a dude on the football field and our dude on the baseball field. I can’t think of anyone better who needed the ball than our senior. He gave us everything he had. He got up to 88-89 [mph] last night, which was really impressive.”

Ainsworth — who was a player the last time Mize advanced to, and won, the state championship series in 2003 — reflected on what this opportunity means for the Bulldogs.

“I knew it would be a war there at Clarkdale, but I have 23 guys that I wouldn’t want to go to war with more than them,” Ainsworth said. “We’ve been the underdog all season, but one thing about regular-season rankings is they don’t matter. I’m just thankful for the opportunity. I’m thankful to Mize, Mr. King, Coach Gordon, and Coach Maddox for allowing me to coach where I’m from. Like they always say, there’s no place like home.”

Mize (29-8) will face East Webster (35-7) in the Class 2A State Championship series. Game 1 is set for Thursday at 4 p.m. at Trustmark Park in Pearl, MS.
