🏆⚾ Mize baseball sits atop its respective classification for the first time since 2003! 🐾💙
Behind dominant pitching performances from junior Holder McAlpin in Game 1 and senior Trey Myers in Game 2, the Bulldogs swept East Webster 3-0 and 2-0 to capture the MHSAA Class 2A State Championship Series at Trustmark Park on Friday, May 22, 2026.
Head coach Justin Ainsworth, who was a player on the Bulldogs’ last championship team in 2003, now brings another state title back to Mize after a 23-year drought.
“Being where you’re from, it’s a lot of pressure,” said Ainsworth. “John King, our superintendent, and Evan Gordon, my principal, gave me this opportunity and believed in us. I’m super excited, and I couldn’t be prouder of our group of guys.
“I won it as a player, and 23 years later, I win it as a coach. We played in three state championship games when I was the head coach at Wayne Academy. I got the silver medallion then, so I guess it was finally time for me to get a gold medallion. I got to win a state championship with my son, and I couldn’t ask for more.”
Holder McAlpin was named MVP of the series after tossing a complete-game no-hitter in Game 1 on Thursday evening. McAlpin also recorded a hit in Game 2.
Trey Myers delivered another complete-game performance in Game 2 on Friday, allowing just five hits while striking out five. Together, the Bulldogs’ pitching staff combined for two shutouts in the championship series.
“We tried to keep East Webster off balance,” said Ainsworth. “We tried to throw fastballs for strikes when we could. I thought we battled well on the mound, which our pitching has been great all season.”
When asked what made the Bulldogs so dominant in the championship series, Ainsworth praised the team’s chemistry.
“These guys battle together,” said Ainsworth. “They come together as a team. We’ve faced some adversity, and it brought us closer together.”
Mize scored just five total runs in the series — three in the fourth inning of Game 1 and two in the second inning of Game 2 — but the Bulldogs’ pitching proved to be more than enough.
“Our pitching staff is jam up,” said Ainsworth. “Our pitchers got a lot of work as sophomores and Trey as a junior last year. Our pitching coach, Coach Drew Robbins, does a great job working with our guys. We tried not to throw them a whole lot before Spring Break, then stretched them out after Spring Break.”
Trey Myers led the Bulldogs offensively in the series with three hits.
