After Tuesday's wildlife encounter with a bear at the Grand County High School and Margaret L. Hopkin Middle School, it is a great opportunity to ensure that parents, guardians and student stakeholders are aware and follow our Standard Response Protocols (SRP). Grand County schools, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students, staff and faculty use the standardized language to communicate universal responses to hazards or threats. This allows for situational awareness, responses that match the need of the event, and the ability to focus on an action to keep everyone safe. Not all schools have to have the same "SRP Action" at one time. Because of varying factors at each school, Incident Commanders can respond in adaptive ways. Tuesday, because of the bear's proximity to MLHMS, Incident Command chose to initiate a "SECURE," and the GCHS initiated a "HOLD." These action initiatives are not permanent and can move throughout the situation and movement restriction. There was no "LOCKDOWN" action initiated on Tuesday. "LOCKDOWN" is a very serious action, and is initiated when there is an active threat or intruder inside a building, a report of a weapon, a dangerous animal has entered the interior of a school building, or any other serious or dangerous situation to keep kids and staff safe. We will continue to keep parents and guardians informed of SRP Actions as quickly as possible, but our primary commitment is always to keep kids safe in the event of a hazard or emergency.

Please be aware that a bear has been spotted in the area near both the middle school and high school campuses. Local law enforcement and wildlife officials are on site and actively managing the situation to ensure everyone remains safe. Students and staff are secure inside our buildings. The high school is currently on a "Hold" order. This situation may impact afternoon pickup procedures, so please monitor your email and official school communication channels for further updates as we receive more details from officials. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we prioritize the safety of our school community. https://edl.io/n2223998

Parents and Guardians,
Grand County School District is working alongside Moab City to ensure students and staff are safely welcomed to school this week and beyond.
If your students walk or ride down the Millcreek Pathway to attend any of our schools, please read the “Bear Sighting” advisement from Moab Police Department and Department of Wildlife Services.
Alongside Public Safety officials, we will take precautionary and safety measures to ensure school resumes as normal while wildlife may be near or on our campuses.
