During Monday’s City Council meeting, Fire Chief Don Ryan recognized Firefighter Jamarryon Jackson with the Award of Valor for extraordinary actions taken in the line of duty.
On November 15, 2025, at 4:33PM, the Moberly Joint Communications dispatched the MFD to a possible structure fire on Shumate Avenue with reports of an occupant trapped. Upon arrival, there were flames coming from the front and right side of the residence. A male occupant of the home reported to Fire Command Lt. Mark Cody that his mother was still inside. Engine 1 arrived on scene with Engineer McCawley and FF Jackson. Lt. Cody instructed FF Jackson to make entry and conduct a primary search for the individual. FF Jackson entered the structure and was able to locate the victim. He established a viable drag technique, secured the individual, and was able to bring them to the front door. There Lt. Cody and Engineer McCawley assisted in pulling the victim safety away from the structure, giving the individual a second chance at life. Personnel remained with the victim until an EMS crew arrived on scene and took over care of the victim.
In the fire service, this type of rescue—known as “making a grab”—is a rare and defining moment, achieved by fewer than 10% of firefighters over the course of their entire careers. Firefighter Jackson, within his first few months on the job, accomplished it through courage, decisive action, and an unwavering commitment to protecting life.
“This 'grab' is the epitome of the motto of the fire service: ‘Risk a Lot to Save a Lot,’” Chief Ryan said during the presentation. “It’s the goal of all firefighters to promote and perform in a manner that protects LIFE first and property second.”
Moberly Fire Department is proud to recognize Firefighter Jamarryon Jackson for his valor, professionalism, and dedication to the Moberly community.
