FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On Thursday, August 27, 2026, at approximately 11:30am, the United States Marshals Service, Moberly Area SWAT Team, Operation Relentless Pursuit, Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, Chariton County Sheriff’s Department, and the North Missouri Drug Task Force responded to the 1000 block of Sinnock Avenue to locate and arrest 51-year-old Christopher Viley on Randolph County warrant -CR00709, Class A Felony Homicide, Murder 1st Degree, no bond, for the death of 57-year-old Cheryl Gravitt.
After a brief standoff, Viley exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.
As this is an active investigation, no further information will be released at this time.
The charges for which the individual was arrested are mere accusations and are not evidence of guilt. Evidence in support of the charges must be presented before a court of competent jurisdiction to a trial jury whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.

On Sunday, August 23, 2026, at approximately 7:10 p.m., the Moberly Police Department responded to a report of a female subject lying on the ground with trauma to her head in the 500 block of Morehead Street.
Upon arrival, officers located a female subject with a possible gunshot wound. Responding units, along with the Moberly Fire Department, rendered aid, and the Randolph County Ambulance District transported the subject to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. The female was identified as 57-year-old Cheryl Gravitt.
The Randolph County Coroner has ruled the death a homicide and requested that an autopsy be conducted.
Investigators are actively interviewing witnesses to identify the person or persons responsible. The joint investigation is being conducted by the Moberly Police Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, and the Randolph County Coroner.
This is an active and ongoing investigation. To protect the integrity of the investigation, further details will not be released at this time.

The Moberly Police Department is investigating a shooting in the 500 block of Morehead. The scene is secure and has been determined to be an isolated incident. There is no danger to the community. No further details will be released at this time as the investigation is ongoing.

As the school year kicks off tomorrow, our School Resource Officer, Travis Mitchell, reminds drivers to be patient as commuting routines change for the fall.

If possible, avoid school zones this week while parents and new drivers acclimate to new schedules and driving habits.

School busses will begin routes this week. When following a bus, slow down when the yellow caution lights illuminate and prepare to stop. If a bus is stopped with red lights flashing, the law requires drivers to stop on both sides of the roadway. The only exception is on East Rollins (from Morley St to Hwy 63) and North Morley (from Coates St to Hwy 24), which qualify as divided highways. Use caution when proceeding in these areas.

Watch for children during school commute times in the morning and afternoon, and help us get our students home safely!

The Law Enforcement Training Institute (LETI) celebrated the graduation of 20 recruits on Friday morning, one of whom will become an officer with the Moberly Police Department.

Officer Jeffrey Wegs completed the Class A-certified Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy which totaled nearly 700 hours of instruction over 19 weeks. Graduates have passed the rigorous Missouri Department of Public Safety’s Peace Officer Standards and Training Program (POST) licensing test.

The Boone County Sheriff's Office Regional Training Center manages LETI in partnership with University of Missouri Extension, continuing over 60 years of national recognition for excellence in professional development. The academy prepares recruits with coursework that covers constitutional and Missouri statutory law, traffic law, ethics, human behavior, tactical communications, and criminal investigation. Training also includes fi****ms qualifications, driver training, physical conditioning, and practical application exercises. Officer Wegs received recognition at ceremony for excellence in report documentation during the academy and served in the Color Guard.

Family members, along with Department and City staff, attended the graduation. Officer Wegs will be sworn in during an upcoming ceremony with the City Council before beginning his service in law enforcement in the city.
