🚵♀️ We've seen a lot of big people on small bikes. 😀 While it may look a little awkward at times, we love that folks are out using the parks! 🚵♂️
⚠️ However, we want to ensure they do so safely and in keeping with the policy covering motorized vehicles on the trails and sidewalks within the parks. 🌞 On roadways, the rules of the road apply. 🌳 We also encourage parents to know the policy, where your youth are going, and set expectations because... well, that's part of 'adulting.' ⚠️
☀️ The short version is that only Class 1 Pedal Assist bikes are allowed on asphalt trail in Rothwell Park, may not exceed 15 mph, and must always drive cautiously and yield to all other trail users. 🚵♂️ No other motorized vehicles, bikes, or scooters are allowed on the asphalt trail in Rothwell Park and no motorized or pedal assisted bikes or vehicles of any kind are allowed on any other trail sidewalk. ⚠️ Be safe out there! 🌳
2.1.3 Vehicles
All persons operating any type of motor vehicle in any public park shall do so in a prudent and careful manner so as not to obstruct traffic and shall observe all speed and traffic regulations. All motor vehicles must park in designated areas which include those areas paved, graveled or otherwise marked for parking. For events that require more parking than space available, vehicles will need to be parked at a place that will not obstruct the use or enjoyment of any of the amenities of the park.
All public motor vehicles, which include four wheel drives, ATVs, motorcycles and any other motorized vehicle, must stay on designated roadways at all times. No vehicles, except those work vehicles of the City and other vehicles engaged in maintenance of the park are allowed to drive on non-roadway areas of the park.
No motorized vehicles are allowed on trails and sidewalks in the parks except:
1. ADA Accommodation
Mobility equipment and devices required and authorized by medical personnel for individuals with medical conditions may be utilized on trails and sidewalks in the park system.
2. Public Vehicles
Vehicles engaged in maintenance, courtesy rides, park system administration, emergency services, or otherwise authorized by the MPRD may ride on or across trails when required.
3. Electrically-assisted pedal powered cycle on Trails
(a) For purposes of this section, the following definitions apply:
"Cycle" shall mean any device upon which a person may ride; propelled by human power, having two (2) or more wheels, excluding wheelchairs. "Electrically-assisted pedal powered cycle" is defined as a device weighing less than one hundred twenty-five (125) pounds, having two (2) or more wheels that are a minimum of sixteen (16) inches in diameter with fully operable pedals upon which a person may pedal the cycle, propelled by human power with the assistance of an electric motor of less than seven hundred fifty (750) watts or one horsepower (1 h.p.), whose maximum speed on a paved level surface, when powered solely by such a motor, is less than fifteen (15) miles per hour.
(b) Electrically-assisted pedal powered cycles shall only be operated on the paved trail in Rothwell Park. They may not be used on any other unpaved trail, paved trail, or sidewalk anywhere else in the park system.
(c) Rules applicable to electrically-assisted pedal powered vehicles are:
(1) No person shall operate an electrically-assisted pedal powered cycle on a city trail or in a city park at speeds greater than fifteen (15) miles per hour; and
(2) It shall be unlawful to operate an electrically-assisted pedal powered cycle on a city trail in a careless and imprudent manner.
(3) Users must always yield to pedestrians/hikers, slow to a walking pace when passing, and declare their presence to other trail users prior to passing.
