Utility crews are conducting annual hydrant flushing throughout the city, including this weekend on Saturday and Sunday in the Downtown area. The process involves opening selected fire hydrants to confirm functionality and allowing extended flow times to flush sedimentation from the distribution system. This is in addition to regular monthly water quality testing that occurs throughout the system.
During hydrant flushing, residents may see a periodic pressure drop or slightly discolored water when minerals and sediment in the lines are stirred up. This is temporary and not harmful. If you encounter discoloration, simply open a cold water faucet for several minutes to clear the line. If you have questions about flushing in your neighborhood, call the Water Office at 660-269-7620.
