Today is the day we’ve all worked so hard for, on both sides of the aisle. Each of us is hopeful that the candidate we support will be given the opportunity to serve the city of Mobile, Alabama, as its next mayor. This is also the day when the chosen leader becomes accountable for every promise made and every word spoken to the community over the past nine months.

Though we may stand in different political parties or represent different backgrounds, let us not remain divided once the results are in. My plea is simple: exercise your right to vote, and when the choice has been made, let us come together as one people for the good of our city. May God’s will be done. Amen.

For everyone who’s truly interested in what the mayoral candidates are bringing to the table, here’s your chance to hear it directly from the source.

Unfortunately, a few “crabs in the bucket” here in Mobile are so focused on candidate Barbara Drummond having to prove what she’s done for the city, while overlooking the opposing candidate’s lack of experience, interest, and community involvement. Even those folks should still tune in and educate themselves.

And for the people in Prichard, Saraland, and Chickasaw—this is worth watching too. After all, we know how often efforts are made to steer our people away from supporting our own.

When I look at the Republican side of this mayoral campaign, I see the same old advertising tactics. They focus on what benefits them—which makes sense for their agenda—but what’s always disturbing is that in their commercials, you only see one Black person. That’s not genuine representation; that’s checking a box to appear inclusive.

What frustrates me even more is that too often, the very people who need the most help end up supporting candidates who will never stand for them, even when they’re in positions to make real change. When will we stop letting ourselves be bought by words instead of holding leaders accountable for their actions?

We are smarter. We work harder. We are qualified. Yet, we are continually overlooked and snubbed out of opportunities we deserve.

On September 23, we have one chance—our ONLY chance—to change the outlook of our city. This is the moment to elect the candidate who truly understands us, who will be our voice, and who is willing to move in our favor. Even if you’ve never voted before, now is the time to step into the game.

And to those who refuse to vote or support: please don’t call me later to complain about circumstances you helped create by staying silent.
