It is easy to think of Memorial Day as the unofficial start of summer, a time for cookouts, family gatherings and a well-earned day off. There is nothing wrong with any of that.

But, we owe it to the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country to pause and remember why we have this holiday in the first place.

Memorial Day exists to honor the fallen: the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could live, work and build businesses in freedom.

Whether you visit a cemetery, attend a memorial service or simply take a quiet moment to reflect, I hope you carry that spirit of gratitude with you this weekend. Freedom is not free, and we should all remember those who paid the price.
