Mobile County Commission President Connie Hudson joined community members and art enthusiasts Thursday to mark the opening of "GATEWAY: From Graffiti to Gallery" at the Mobile Museum of Art.

"GATEWAY" explores how five influential artists—Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, KAWS, and Banksy—transformed street art into recognized contemporary masterpieces. Drawing from the Masterworks Foundation collection, the exhibit traces how these artists brought the energy of city streets onto gallery walls.

The Mobile County Commission is pleased to support local cultural programming and help bring world-class exhibits like "GATEWAY" to Mobile County.

The Mobile County Commission hosted a community meeting Aug. 17 at Turnerville Baptist Church to update residents on the final paving phase for Maddox Road.

Once complete, the multi-phase project will fully pave Maddox Road from Walter Moore Road to Roberts Road. Funding for all three project segments was provided through the 2020, 2022, and 2024 voter-approved Mobile County Transportation Pay-As-You-Go Programs.

Right-of-way acquisition is complete for the first two segments, with utility companies scheduled to begin line relocations soon. Right-of-way acquisition is currently underway for the third and final segment.

Construction bids for the first two projects are expected by the end of this year, with the final segment slated to go to bid in the first half of next year.

Four new fields are now open at the Mobile County Sportsplex Soccer Complex!

The nearly $11.7 million Phase II expansion adds four lighted, sodded fields, a second restroom/concession building, and 300 additional parking spaces, expanding the complex from three to seven operational fields.

Mobile County Commission President Connie Hudson, who has spearheaded development of the Sportsplex, said the additional fields mean more opportunities for local athletes and families while expanding Mobile County’s capacity to host regional tournaments.

More to come! The long-term plan calls for 10 tournament-quality fields including a 2,000-seat Championship Field with press box and bleachers, and the new Mobile County Aquatics Center Phase I will be opening soon.

Summer Burn Ban Reminder! From March to October, burning yard waste and debris is banned in Mobile County to protect air quality and reduce harmful ozone and fine particles, as outlined by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM). This seasonal burn ban is not the same as drought-related burn bans — it’s about keeping our air clean and our community healthy.

🚫 What’s banned?
Burning wood, brush, yard debris.
Burning construction or land-clearing waste.

✅ Better alternatives:
Compost yard waste.
Use leaves and clippings as mulch to enrich your garden and save water.

Let’s work together for cleaner air and a healthier community! For more details, visit: https://adem.alabama.gov/news/adem-reminds-alabamians-burn-ban
