The Alabama Forest Land Trust is pleased to welcome Thomas Reddick as the new Executive Director, effective August 7, 2023. Thomas brings an extensive background of leadership and strategic experience in the field of forestry and land conservation. Thomas gained experience in Alabama forestry during his time with Cooper Timberlands in Mobile and, more recently, as the Director of Forest Management with the Nature Conservancy of Alabama. He obtained a master’s degree from The University of Georgia’s Langdale Center for Forest Business and an undergraduate degree in Forestry from Auburn University’s College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment. In 2016, he completed certification as a Registered Forester in Alabama. As the new Executive Director, Thomas will lead growth initiatives and drive innovation, further solidifying AFLT’s position as a leader in land conservation in Alabama.

Thomas is enthusiastic about leading AFLT into its next phase of growth, saying, "It’s an honor to lead AFLT into its next era, building upon the foundation Dan Dumont and the board established as the leading conservation organization for private working forests in Alabama. I’m excited to move back to Mobile and continue advancing forest conservation while supporting the local landowners and economies that make our work possible."

We are deeply saddened by the passing of AFLT Executive Director and In-house Counsel Dan Dumont on July 29, 2023, after a brief illness.

Dan was a true conservationist and a pillar of Alabama's conservation community. His quarter century of work with the AFLT protected nearly 83,000 acres of forest and farmlands through conservation easements, and his legacy will live on for generations to come.

Dan was a passionate advocate for the environment, and he worked tirelessly to protect Alabama's natural resources. He was a visionary leader, and he was always looking for new ways to conserve land and promote sustainable practices.

Dan was also a kind and generous person, and he always put others before himself. He was a true friend and colleague, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Dan's family and friends during this difficult time. We will never forget Dan's contributions to conservation in Alabama, and we will continue to work to carry on his legacy.

Thank you, Dan, for everything.

A very big thanks to the Lanier family (Sehoy Plantation) for again hosting the US Forest Service crew this week for the annual Red-cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) artificial cavity "blitz" at five AFLT conservation easement properties in Bullock, Macon, and Russell counties. This stable population of over 40 RCW family groups is the only one in Alabama solely confined to private lands, and they need our help. With over 300 cavity trees across this landscape, 50 fresh cavities were installed, mostly by removing and replacing those that had deteriorated with age. Thanks also to the US Forest Service for sending its finest, the Chattahoochee Fall Line Conservation Partnership for providing critical funding, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service and ADCNR for participating as well.

Nesting Snowy Egrets, Great Egrets, White Ibises, Little Blue Herons, and Anhingas are safe from predators on this alligator-guarded island in an ancient oxbow lake along the Alabama River. This privately owned 2000+ acre property is protected through a conservation easement administered by the Alabama Forest Resources Center.
