The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department proudly recognizes District Chief of Training Mack Weaver as the May 2026 Firefighter of the Month.

Chief Weaver spent several weeks diligently breaking down and replacing rotten wood and broken parts, improving the quality of facilities at an aging Training Academy.

Not only did he perform the work on his own merit, but he, also, secured funding and used many of his personal tools and equipment to complete necessary repairs and upgrades.

Chief Weaver feverishly worked past regular hours to complete these projects, all while maintaining and propelling the 26-01 recruit class towards graduation and preparing facilities for department-wide, quarterly training.

Chief Weaver has served as the Department’s Chief of Training for more than five years. In his time in the role, he has been an invaluable educator and life coach, mentoring inexperienced recruits and veterans alike.

In doing so, Chief Weaver has been instrumental in changing the culture of the department and establishing a comprehensive, professional standards for the future of the MFRD.

(Tuesday 1:45pm): A tropical disturbance near the Texas coast COULD impact parts of our area later this week in the form of heavy rain, flash flooding and high surf.

Please monitor changing weather conditions where you live through a reputable source. The graphic below was put out earlier today by the US National Weather Service Mobile Alabama.

While we don't expect widespread impacts, we always urge you to have a plan in place before any storm threatens the Mobile area.

While our part of the Gulf Coast isn't expecting a tropical storm or hurricane in the immediate future, we want to make sure you're prepared in case that changes later this year. The 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season began on June 1st, and it's important to take proactive steps now so you'll be ready.

When a hurricane is approaching, stress levels rise and decisions often need to be made quickly. A written plan helps ensure everyone knows what to do, where to go, and how to communicate.

Last week, MFRD firefighters responded to the 3700 block of Vista Ridge Drive for a residence on fire. The homeowner reported “hearing a loud pop” at the rear of the residence before smelling smoke.

Crews arrived to discover large amounts of black smoke visible from the roof. The resident was able to safely escape, but a family dog was suspected to still be inside. Rescue teams on Engine 7 entered at the rear of the house and rescued the dog from the burning residence filled with toxic smoke.

Firefighters discovered flames in the attic and were able to quickly extinguish without further incident. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental in nature, but the investigation is ongoing.

No firefighters, civilians, or pets were harmed as a result of the incident.
