61 years ago today, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 became law—one of the most consequential victories of the Civil Rights Movement.

That victory was not freely given. It was won through courage, sacrifice, organizing, marching, and the unwavering determination of ordinary people who demanded that America live up to its promise of democracy.

At the Center for Fair Housing, we recognize that the fight for voting rights and the fight for fair housing are part of the same pursuit: equal opportunity, equal protection, and the right of every person to have a voice in shaping their community and their future.

We honor those who fought before us by continuing the work before us. Remember the history. Protect the progress. Use your voice. Exercise your power. VOTE.

The good news: The Family and Community domain saw the most progress in the 2026 KIDS COUNT® Data Book. From 2019 to 2024, 45 states improved, while the remaining five held steady. No states declined.

Listen Up Friends of Fair Housing! Stand with US

🚨 Fair Housing Week of Action is here.

Local fair housing organizations have been on the front lines of fighting housing discrimination for decades. But today, many are at risk of closure.

Recent HUD actions could prevent experienced local organizations from receiving the federal funding they need to investigate discrimination, educate communities, and enforce the protections guaranteed under the Fair Housing Act of 1968. Without that funding, those critical organizations may be forced to close, lay off staff, or significantly reduce services.

These organizations, like the Center for Fair Housing, handle more than 70% of housing discrimination cases nationwide. If they disappear, countless individuals and families could lose trusted advocates when they need one most.

Now is the time to act.

Our goal is to send 5,000 messages to Congress urging lawmakers to:
✔️ Protect local fair housing organizations
✔️ Preserve fair housing enforcement
✔️ Ensure communities continue to have access to critical support
