May is recognized as American Stroke Awareness Month.

Strokes are the fifth leading cause of death in the US and are a leading cause of adult disability. Major risk factors for stroke include high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease and atrial fibrillation.

You may be able to prevent stroke or reduce your risk through healthy lifestyle changes. In fact, Medicare covers several preventative services at no cost.

For more information, contact the SHIIP Office at Davie County Senior Services at (336) 753-6230.
