Home Fires Burning At Home Fires Burning we find out what our veterans need and take care of those needs without red tape, delays or bureaucratic forms.

What we did: paid a substantial past due power bill balance, which, if unpaid, would have resulted in electricity being shut off the next day to a veteran who is bedbound and his spouse who cares for him.

How it happened: a social worker called us. She mentioned that when she worked at the Fayetteville VA years ago, she remembered Home Fires Burning being the people to call if you had a need which couldn’t be met by other agencies. She recounted that she had called six - eight other well-known veterans assistance groups, and none of them could help. Could we? Of course.

Paid just about half of a very large past due Duke Energy bill which would prevent the veteran from getting power turned on at the location to which he was moving. We couldn’t pay the entire amount because the weather for these last 2+ weeks has impacted our funds BUT the social worker assured us that they had resources to be able to pay the remainder after we paid it down!

We just paid a past due electric bill for a veteran who has had two strokes within a year, fell behind on her payments and was facing having her power cut-off.

Received an email from a veteran’s representative:

A veteran had a large car repair which was primarily covered by warranty, but there was a substantial deductible, which the Veteran could not afford. The veteran was honorably discharged, but did not fit the categories which would allow money to be used to pay for this deductible. So they reached out to us.

We committed to make a payment for the deductible. When we were notified that the car was ready to be picked up, we called and made that payment.

The Veteran will be back on the road because she needs this car for her job!

We got a message from a social worker that a veteran was unexpectedly stranded after his VA appointment. We were able to pay for an Uber to get him home.
Then, a veteran was very low on propane for heating his home so we bought enough to get him and his wife through a month or two.

We’re are on a ROLL for veterans for Christmas.

A Veterans Social Worker called: A veteran required transportation a considerable distance for a critical appointment. We secured a Greyhound bus ticket between the 2 cities for a ~20 hour trip. Since he got In at 0045 with no place to stay, we also got a motel room nearby where he could rest until going to his appointment.

Next we were confronted with a request from a social worker who had a veteran with the largest rental arrears we have ever seen. We could not satisfy the whole amount BUT, a combined effort by 2 churches, the veteran herself, and Home Fires Burning put together enough to satisfy the arrears and prevent eviction!

We were able to do a two-fer this week:

We took a disabled Korean War era veteran to get a haircut and prescriptions. His clothes dryer had recently quit working so we took him by Lowe’s where he picked out a dryer. We loaded into our van and brought it home and installed it in the home!

We sent a money order to a landlord for past due rent and penalties so a veteran could catch up and then remain current. He had been struggling with past due charges which actually prevented him from getting current on his rent.

We received a message from a social worker about a veteran, wife and two children living in their car, waiting for housing voucher. The battery went dead on their car. The social worker asked if we could get if we could purchase a battery for the Veteran Within an hour, we went online, purchased the battery through Advance Auto, and made it available for pick up at the store closest to the Veteran.

The comment from the social worker was: “Thank you Sir - You win the shortest response time award - YOU ROCK!”

We received a call from a VA caseworker with a situation where of Veteran needed assistance on paying the rent. The Veteran had gotten behind a month or two ago and every time she tried to catch up, there were late fees and penalties. We paid a portion which would allow her to become flush and the veteran can now keep up each month

One thing about us - we don’t have inflexible rules about how we help a veteran!

Disabled veteran who JUST got his life back in order broke off the only key he had for his vehicle. Of course he relies on that vehicle for critical transportation. Estimated cost of a new key cylinder and key and labor programming is about $500.

Who could possibly help with such an unusual request? Most agencies are restricted to help with rent or utilities.

The social worker called us. As she put it, she knew we could help with the “odd” request. Of course we answered the need.

We were able to partner up with a local American Legion Post and pay the entire past due utility bill so the veteran’s electricity was not turned off! Good to have cooperating partners taking care of our veterans!

05/09/2025

We partnered with another agency to pay a past due rent amount for a veteran’s widow. She faced some obstacles because not all organizations allow financial assistance to spouses of deceased veterans.

BTW: We consider surviving spouses a part of our family and believe our obligation to surviving spouses every bit as important as the veteran.
