Council Member Eric E. Alvarez Proudly serving the City of Modesto as Council Member for District 2

The renaming of District 2’s Fourth Street Park, as many know, is now official.

At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, my colleagues and I voted 6-1 to officially rename the park Fourth Street Park.

Many residents have deep-seated memories of Fourth Street Park, as does my family and many of our family friends dating back to the 1970s and 1980s.

I considered the many stories I have heard recently, along with those I grew up hearing, as I formulated my decision to vote in favor of Fourth Street Park as the park’s new official name.

This is a small victory for all of those families whose memories, traditions, and experiences are connected to Fourth Street Park.

In response to public concerns regarding the name of Cesar E. Chavez Park, the City of Modesto’s Culture Commission initiated the process to rename the park at a Special Meeting on March 23, 2026. A 30-day public input period began the following day, allowing community members to submit name suggestions to the Commission.

After reviewing the full list of suggestions, the Culture Commission presented three name recommendations to the City Council: 4th Street Park, Si Se Puede Park, and Farm Workers Park.

In alignment with community feedback, the City Council voted to approve the renaming of Cesar E. Chavez Park to 4th Street Park at a City Council meeting on June 9, 2026.
