Every Saturday, my husband and son made plans to avoid cleaning because "housework is a woman's job" — I finally had enough, and when they came home that evening, my son stared at the house and shouted, "Mom, have you lost your mind?!"
My husband, Eric, had never been much help around the house.
Whenever I asked him to vacuum or fold laundry, there was always an excuse.
"I'm exhausted."
"My back hurts."
"I'll do it tomorrow."
Tomorrow rarely came.
So I cleaned, cooked, did the laundry, and still helped our son, Nigel, with homework every evening.
For years, I told myself it was easier than arguing.
Then Nigel became a teenager.
And I started hearing Eric's words coming out of his mouth.
One Saturday, the house desperately needed a deep clean.
There were piles of laundry, bathrooms to scrub, floors to mop, and a kitchen that needed hours of work.
At breakfast, I said,
"Guys, I need both of you to help today."
Eric laughed.
"Cleaning is women's work."
Nigel leaned back in his chair.
"Dad's right. A woman's place is in the kitchen. He never helps you, and I'm not going to either. That's humiliating."
Eric actually smiled.
Then he grabbed the car keys.
"Come on, son. Let's have a boys' day."
Nigel jumped up.
"Fishing?"
"Fishing."
Twenty minutes later, they loaded their rods and cooler into the car.
Eric waved from the driveway.
"Have fun cleaning!"
I watched them drive away.
Then something in me finally snapped.
I didn't wash a single dish.
I didn't touch the laundry.
Instead, I spent the afternoon making a very different arrangement.
That evening, Eric's car pulled into the driveway.
Nigel opened the front door first.
He took one look inside and froze.
Then he shouted,
"Mom, have you lost your mind?!"
