The La Loma Native Garden is starting to show its fall color. California fuchsia blooms are popping, California buckwheat is turning to its rusty hue. These valuable plants provide food for late season foraging bees. Of course one of the most beneficial plants for wildlife are the sunflowers which are currently being visited by sweat bees and long-horned bees. They also prefer the yellow grindelia blooms too. The desert willows and Palo verde are feeding the larger carpenter bees.
The garden is thriving for local wildlife. Be on the lookout for the flocks of visiting goldfinches and sparrows who indulge in sunflower seeds and other native plants with seedheads. Seeds are very important for migrating birds, so we try not to remove too many even if they look dry. The non native Texas ranger is also a great pollinator attraction for honey bees. Some other late blooms are blue flax, purple asters, golden bush , apricot mallow and milkweed.

This pigeon landed in my yard. It has a white leg band and red leg band. I think it belongs to someone. Does anybody know anyone that owns a pigeon? It doesn’t seem scared of us.
