Legal meetings can move quickly, and it’s easy to forget critical questions.
Encourage your loved one to write down questions before speaking with their attorney.

This helps ensure they leave the conversation feeling more informed and prepared.

A criminal charge can feel overwhelming. Knowing what to do in those first few days is critical for your defense.
If you are facing a criminal charge in Stanislaus County, follow these three essential steps:

1. Exercise Your Right to Silence: Do not discuss the details of your case with anyone without your attorney present.
2. Request Counsel Immediately: If you cannot afford an attorney, you have the right to a Public Defender.
3. Stay Off Social Media: It’s tempting to share your side of the story online, but posts, comments, or photos can be discovered and used by the prosecution. The best place to tell your story is in a confidential meeting with your legal team.

Facing the court system is stressful, but you don't have to navigate it alone. We are here to ensure your rights are protected.

One of the best ways to support a loved one in custody is to watch what you say on the phone.

In Stanislaus County, almost all calls from the facility are recorded and can be used as evidence by the prosecution. Even a "small" detail can have a big impact on a case.

How you can help:

• Keep conversations personal and supportive.
• Talk about family, health, and home.
• Save the legal details for their Public Defender.

Did you know that a robust public defense system actually saves the county money? In California, the estimated cost to incarcerate one person for a year can top $100,000. Public defenders can connect clients to resources and reduce unnecessary detentions - helping to keep people working and families intact.

Our Director of Holistic Defense, Shelli Margarite, recently had the opportunity to visit the Stockton Health Care Facility and learn more about the incredible BARK Program 🐾

This inspiring program gives certain incarcerated individuals the chance to raise and train future service dogs in partnership with Canine Companions. These dogs go on to transform the lives of people with disabilities every single day 💙

It’s powerful to see programs that create second chances, build skills, and make a lasting impact both inside and outside the facility.

📢 Standing up for public defense

Today, our Public Defender Jennifer Jennison joined 16 fellow Public Defenders from across California at the State Capitol to rally in support of ACR 159.

This important resolution highlights the critical role of indigent defense in ensuring due process and calls for much-needed state funding to recruit and retain public defenders.

Public defense is essential to a fair and balanced justice system, and we are proud to stand alongside advocates statewide pushing for stronger support and resources. ⚖️
