Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) is a disease that is carried by wild birds and affects domestic poultry. With more than 19 million birds in flight and spring migration currently underway, now is the time for poultry farmers to ramp up biosecurity efforts.

“A total of eight positive cases have been confirmed in South Dakota since March 6,” says Miranda Meehan, NDSU Livestock & Environmental Stewardship specialist. “The risk for more infected birds will increase as migratory birds start returning to the area.”

Farming and ranching has consistently been ranked among the top ten most stressful occupations. Too much stress takes a toll on health, including one’s mental and emotional well-being. We suggest health is the most important asset to any farm or ranch operation.

NDSU Extension and FirstLink are jointly supporting two upcoming training sessions in Adult Mental Health First Aid, particularly in support of those working in agriculture. Sometimes you need help. Sometimes you are help. This training can provide you with awareness and skills to support the mental and emotional health of oneself and others working in agriculture or those supporting the agricultural industry. This training is offered through support from the ND Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Center grant (USDA-NIFA) and is free.

Congratulations Josh & Kari! Thank you for all you do for our communities!

Josh and Kari Cook raise corn, beans, spring wheat, canola and sunflowers near Kenmare using mostly no-till farming practices and they plant cover crops. They also have a 200-head cow-calf operation, where they background the calves and operate a beef retail operation, selling their home-raised beef under the name of Sunset Meats. They have been farming for 18 years. Josh also is a member of the Renville County Ag Improvement Board and NDSU Extension Board of Visitors, a 4-H and FFA livestock coach, and a township supervisor and treasurer. Kari is a 4-H leader.
