As you may have heard MDOT is closing down US41 and putting a detour on M26 in order to get to Copper Harbor. The good news is this does not cause any problems if you are coming up to the mine. The road closure is scheduled from August 10th - 14th and happens well north of us by Lake Medora. ACE is our place

We just want to give a shout out to the team over at ACE Calumet. Over the last 3 years we have focused on buying local as much as possible and with the upkeep here at the mine you can bet that has been allot. We recently completed a face lift to the site that included a full repaint and matching of colors across the property. The team at ACE has been great in helping out with this and every other project we have been tackling.

We have been working on many things for the site this summer and things are moving along. As we continue to work on our trails we finally have our first trail sign up to help guide guests. The only input Laurie had after seeing the sign was "it should have read Lauries Way" I am glad I did not think of that or she would always point that out to me for the rare ocassions we do not agree on something😂.

We had a visit today from a very prepared Canine. Fox stopped by with his owners in tow prepared to explore the mine below. He brought his own helmet and safety light. I am told he had a great time below exploring dark holes and cracks.

Ready to go 100 feet underground into Michigan history?

Delaware Mine is one of the Upper Peninsula’s oldest copper mines — and you can still walk through it. Opened in 1847 during the Keweenaw’s copper boom, this mine once had five shafts, with the deepest plunging 1,400 feet and producing more than 8 million tons of copper.

Today, you’ll climb down 100 stairs to Level 1 and explore 1,700 feet of original mine workings on a self-guided tour. You’ll spot pure copper veins in the rock walls, antique mining equipment, and maybe even brown bats snoozing overhead. (Pro tip: bring a sweatshirt — it’s chilly underground.)

Above ground? Ruins, rail cars, engines, a gift shop, and picnic tables where you can eat a pasty like a 19th-century miner.

It never turned a profit — but it might just be one of the coolest experiences in the Keweenaw.

It is a beautiful day up here in the Keweenaw. If your coming by car or the ATV trails stop in for an "elevated experience" (1,109' above sea level to be exact.) The views are spectacular and if your looking to cool off it is 43 degrees in the mine. Happy 4th of July to everyone.

Did you know that the mine is home to over 3000 bats during the winter? Our friends from the DNR made a visit yesterday to see the mine. Normally they show up when there is deep snow and they have to scale down shaft #3 with only their headlamps.

We thank them for their visit and continued support.

Michigan Techs Summer Field School begins again. Yesterday the crew showed up to begin work on the first portion of their project. They plan to expand on last years dig of the Blacksmith Shop. They will be here for a week before heading to Isle Royal then returning to the Delaware in mid July. If you have an interest in Archeology make a visit to see and talk with them.

As the season moves on we have updated many things in the gift shop. Laurie spent time over the off season looking for items uniquely to copper and the mine. Where possible we use local Artisans and Vendors to fulfil our orders. This year we have added mugs, shot glasses, hats and children's tees just to name a few. Our splash copper this season is remarkable and we have stocked up for when things get busy.

Nothing makes Laurie happier than to hear guests talk about how much they enjoy what we have to offer. So if your in the area stop by just to look around in the gift shop. You won't be the firsts to do that. As always thank all of you for visiting and supporting our efforts here in the Keweenaw.

Last night we got to meet a group from KSAR (Keweenaw Search and Rescue). We had them up to the mine to get familiar with the site in case any assistance may be needed at the mine. Two weeks ago a portion of our staff went down to the Quincy for first aid training that was put on my Matt Portfleet from the Adventure Mine. It was a great experience and reminded us we should update procedures at the Delaware. We want to thank the Keweenaw Sheriff and all those from KSAR for their time and efforts all over the Keweenaw.
