Green Hills Preserve

Green Hills Preserve is situated on 201 acres of gently rolling agricultural fields, woodlands, and wetlands. Learn more at www.natlands.org.

See our website for more information including our history, a trail map, and hours of operation. This expanse of rolling grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands was once destined to be paved. A developer had planned to build the “The Villages of Green Hills,” a 600+ house subdivision that would have left little green in these hills. When the developer’s fortunes changed, conserving the property was su

ddenly a possibility. After more than two years working to piece together critical funding from ten different sources, we were able to purchase the property, establishing Green Hills as Natural Lands’ first preserve in Berks County. Green Hills Preserve is owned and managed by non-profit conservation organization Natural Lands.

What the fox? Yep, it's true... research suggests foxes decrease the spread of Lyme Disease. Because of the presence of fox populations, small mammals like mice are more likely to hide away and less likely to carry around ticks. This reduces the rate at which ticks become infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

Enjoy the view! Protected open space is a defining characteristic of our region. (Of course, more than pretty places, protected landscapes offer essential services like absorbing flood waters, filtering drinking water, sequestering carbon, cooling and cleaning the air, and much more.)

The Preserve is situated within the Schuylkill Highlands, a region at the nexus of two landscapes that have been prioritized for protection: the Highlands (as defined by the US Congress) and the Schuylkill River watershed. The area’s importance derives from the need to protect water quality, conserve habitat, and develop recreational opportunities in a region set for considerable growth over the next 20 years.

There is a myth that bumblebees "shouldn't be able to fly." The misconception arose in the 1930s when an aerodynamicist mistakenly applied fixed-wing airplane equations to the insects, failing to account for their rapid, twisting wing movements. Instead of simply flapping up and down, bumblebees beat their wings in a fast, figure-eight motion. This rapid movement (up to 240 times per second) creates tiny, low-pressure air vortexes (miniature hurricanes) above their wings that act as a suction, generating enough lift to keep their heavy bodies airborne.

Can you tell the difference between a Viceroy (left) and a Monarch (right) butterfly? Viceroy butterflies have a distinct black line running horizontally across the lower hind wings, while Monarchs do not. Monarchs are generally larger, with a wingspan of about 3.5 to 4 inches, whereas Viceroys are smaller, typically 2.6 to 3 inches. Monarchs have thicker black veins on their wing patterns.
