Green Hills Preserve

Green Hills Preserve Green Hills Preserve is situated on 201 acres of gently rolling agricultural fields, woodlands, and wetlands. Learn more at www.natlands.org.

See our website for more information including our history, a trail map, and hours of operation. This expanse of rolling grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands was once destined to be paved. A developer had planned to build the “The Villages of Green Hills,” a 600+ house subdivision that would have left little green in these hills. When the developer’s fortunes changed, conserving the property was su

ddenly a possibility. After more than two years working to piece together critical funding from ten different sources, we were able to purchase the property, establishing Green Hills as Natural Lands’ first preserve in Berks County. Green Hills Preserve is owned and managed by non-profit conservation organization Natural Lands.

The Wild Turkey and the Muscovy Duck are the only two domesticated birds native to the "New World." In the early 1500s, European explorers brought home Wild Turkeys from Mexico, where native people had domesticated the birds centuries earlier. Turkeys quickly became popular on European menus thanks to their large size and rich taste from their diet of wild nuts. Later, when English colonists settled on the Atlantic Coast, they brought domesticated turkeys with them.

Sibling rivalry among young American Kestrels can be fierce, and yes — hatch order matters! The larger the clutch, the tougher it can be to compete for food, space, and attention. Clear pecking orders are established early, with the earlier-hatched chicks (or older siblings) usually dominating and getting first-dibs at the dinner table. Or you know, the mouse that was just dropped off.

Nationwide, grassland birds are struggling. Researchers estimate many species have lost more than half their population since 1970. One quarter of these are “Tipping Point Species”: birds that are predicted to lose another 50 percent of their population in the next 50 years. Natural Lands is doing what it can to help.
