I've been hearing quite a bit about the literacy crisis... People are apparently asking for, maybe even demanding, books with simpler language so they're easier to read.

I just opened up Merriam Webster to check a definition and pronunciation and I see this "simple definition" option.

A dictionary adding to the literacy crisis....

Anybody else interested in obscure history books?!

I couldn't help but jump on this bandwagon. I wasn't a fan of history in school, mostly because of how it was taught. Memorize and regurgitate names and dates? No thanks. But make it interesting, creative, and hands-on?? Yes please!! Nowadays, I love local history, museums, historical sites, etc. Including these super specific history books. Who woulda thunk salt and pepper had such an impact on the world?? We take them for granted these days.

Any recommendations for good history books??

Pupdate!!

Pictured here is Mooney (left) and Olly (right). Mooney is the pup we raised for the Seeing Eye previously to Olly. He spent nine months training to be a guide dog. At no fault of his own he did not pass the test to be a working guide dog.

Since we raised Mooney we get the opportunity to keep him as a family pet for the rest of his years! So you might get to see our sweet "Moonpie" if you stop in to grab a book!

As for Olly, he recently turned 9 months old and is still growing. He loves having another big brother (the two golden boys hadn't met before Mooney came back).

The pups of Captain's Bookshelf are happy and healthy!
