This Great Horned Owl was brought in emaciated and dehydrated. Mucous membranes are white/yellow indicating the beginning of liver failure. Eyes are normal and there are no fractures. We need to turn around the starvation. Complication—It reeks because it was hunting a skunk who was going after chickens. An all around bad situation. It will be housed outside while recovering.

This Pygmy owl from Silver Falls was hit by a car and has a concussion. All things considered, this little bird doesn’t seem too bad, but It will take time to see if anything develops. In the meantime we will treat with steroids for swelling, and mitigate treatment as needed for any future developments.

Most birds, including this juvenile Redtail Hawk, need to spend some time on the ground in order to gain the strength they need on their own. The parents were very happy to have their baby back so they could finish raising it to flight and self reliance.

If you find a baby bird, make sure it needs rescuing before you accidentally kidnap it from its parents.

Find a fledgling in your yard? Put it in a laundry basket tied back up in the tree where its parents can continue to support it. This fledgling Redtail Hawk has a lot to learn from its parents.

This 8-10 week old Great Horned Owl was brought to AWF two weeks ago with an old fractured humerus and spinal injury leading to severe neurological deficits on the right side. It’s got a long road to recovery, but made it up the perch for the first time. So far so good.

At AWF it’s always nice to see them fight back. It means they haven’t given up. The Barn Owl came it wit a broken radius and ulna. Dr Ackermann splinted and gave a dose of antibiotics, and now we wait for the bones to heal. Fortunately, it’s eating well so it can take the time it needs to heal.

This Great Horned Owl was shot with a pellet gun and severely injured. Both wings have soft tissue damage but, fortunately, no broken bones. The incident happened a few days so she showed no signs of starvation. She did have pale mucous membrane and cold extremitie however, with bilateral wing droop and some weight loss, although she appeared to be doing well before being shot. She was sedated so pellets could be removed, and given pain meds and subcutaneous fluids. As you can see, she was feeling much better after the procedure.
