SAL Community Services SAL Community Services strengthens children, families, and individuals to build and enhance thriving communities.

At SAL Community Services (SAL), we provide Support, Advocacy, and Learning in our communities—from childhood to adulthood. Our mission is to strengthen children, families, and individuals to build and enhance thriving communities. Founded in 1970, we have a history of listening to the needs of our community and responding. We have grown from an organization focused on providing quality child care to low-income working families to one that meets a wide variety of needs from early care and education to crisis assistance and stabilization services. Today, SAL has a bi-state, 17-county regional footprint from the Quad Cities to the Peoria area. We advocate with and for the people we support, the communities we serve, and the solutions we champion, and we offer an inclusive, welcoming community for the people we serve—and our employees. Visit www.salcommunityservices.org/about-us to learn more about our programs and the services we offer.

Today was more than a ribbon cutting 💙 It was the celebration of a shared vision brought to life.

We were honored to welcome community members, families, partners, elected officials, and staff to celebrate the opening of SAL Community Services' new Rock Island Campus, the new home of our Skip-a-Long Childhood Center and Welcoming Center.

Thank you to Pastor Colvin from Olivet Baptist Church, Rock Island, IL for the invocation and to Congressman Eric Sorensen, Ted Pappas of Friendship Manor, Mallory Merritt of Estes Construction, Brian Hollenback of Economic Growth Corporation, Illinois Department of Early Childhood Secretary Teresa Ramos, and SAL President & CEO Marcy Mendenhall for helping mark this exciting milestone. We were also grateful to be recognized for this transformational project through our Impact - Illowa Construction Labor and Management Council agreement.

🏫 Designed with intention at every turn, this new campus will serve 194 children each day in bright, beautiful classrooms featuring child-sized amenities, washer and dryer units in every room, floor-to-ceiling windows, direct playground access, and an indoor gym for when Midwestern weather days get too harsh. The campus also creates meaningful opportunities for intergenerational programming with Friendship Manor residents and provides essential support for immigrants, refugees, and limited-English-speaking community members through our Welcoming Center.

This campus represents so much more than a building. It is a place where children will learn and grow, families will find support, generations will connect, and our community will thrive together.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this dream a reality 🤝 We are excited to open our doors and begin this next chapter.

🎥 Couldn't join us for the celebration and tours? There’s a sneak peek video of the new campus to watch!
📸 Thank you to Wezz De La Rosa Photography for capturing the day!

Child care affects families, businesses, and our entire community. Four local organizations have partnered on the Scott County Child Care Access Study to find out where care is working and what changes could make the biggest difference.

We're asking parents and caregivers, employers, and child care providers to share their experiences. Whether child care is working well for you or you've struggled to find what you need, we want to hear from you.

🎁 You’ve got a chance to win six prizes valued at nearly $2,000. What are you waiting for?

📅 Surveys close November 6.

What would make child care work better for YOUR family in Scott County?

Child care affects families, local businesses, and our entire community. That’s why we’re partnering with local organizations on the Scott County Child Care Access Study—because we want the people making decisions about child care to understand what families actually need.

If you’re a parent, caregiver, or employer, we invite you to take a few minutes to complete the survey before November 1.

Find your survey ➡️ www.scottcountychildcarestudy.org
The more experiences we hear, the clearer the picture becomes.

All surveys close on Sunday, November 1. Everyone who completed the survey will get a copy of the findings in December.

Help shape what comes next for child care in Scott County.

🎉 Join us in celebrating Malia Owens on an incredible 45-year milestone anniversary with SAL, including 30 years with SAL’s Home Child Care Network where she has helped shaped what is now the largest home child care network in Illinois.

When Malia first joined SAL, the organization operated out of a section of an unused school building in East Moline. Attendance, billing, and records were all tracked with paper and pencil. Over the decades, she has witnessed remarkable growth, technological advances, and the expansion of services that have strengthened families across our region.

For Malia, the most rewarding part of her work has been watching HCCN grow and seeing the countless children, families, and providers impacted along the way. Her dedication, leadership, and commitment to our mission have helped create opportunities for generations of families.

Please join us in congratulating Malia on 45 years of making a difference in early childhood education! Thank you for the lasting impact you continue to make every day! 💙
