My name is Conner Roth, and I am a life scout in boy scout troop 423 in Center Township PA. I have just recently installed a flag retirement box for my Eagle Scout project. I am doing this because we heard the community needed a way to retire flags and most do not know where to go. This box is located at Center Township Volunteer Fire Department #38, at 110 VanKirk Road, Monaca PA. A flag retirement box is similar to a mailbox, but for old flags. A flag that needs to be retired has either touched the ground or has sustained lots of damage. These flags cannot be simply thrown away; they need to be retired honorably. This retirement involves removing the grommets of the flag then burning it while folded, these steps may vary depending on who you ask. With the help of members of my boy scout troop, we constructed a concrete foundation for the box then attached the box. The box is free to use and drop off flags; these will be retired by the troop. In this way I can help my community and the firehall.
