Its no secret that we have hired a plethora of non-local people from out of state. In order for this to be effective, our Field Training Officers and other staff need to be welcoming and understanding of the struggles it takes for people to acclimate not only to the new agency, but also the new environment. The FTO members are given the opportunity to be the face of any agency and create a lasting first impression. The following praise was made by one of our new EMTs that is currently in our orientation process. Thank you to Paramedic FTOs Maggie Fey and Megan Jensen for being that great first impression and helping our new hires acclimate to the new landscape.

"As a new hire to Berkeley, I have been nervous about fitting in and being an outsider (someone not from SC) in an agency that is completely different than what Im used to. Since I have joined the BCEMS ranks, Megan and Maggie were have made me feel part of the family, included me and have embraced me and made like this is now home. I cannot begin to express my gratitude towards these incredible ladies who define the role of Field Training Officer and Mentor." - EMT Dakotah Olcott

"This new freestanding ER will strengthen the emergency response system for the entire County. It will support our first responders, improve patient access to immediate care and help ensure patients receive the right kind of treatment as soon as possible." -EMS Chief Michael Shirey

Long before we ever see patients, we train, practice, and work to master our skills. Many times that training happens internally, but every so often, we have the opportunity to team up with some truly amazing community partners to strengthen our teamwork and ensure we are prepared to provide the best clinical care possible to every patient we serve. Thank you to everyone who helped make last week’s training such a success. A special thank you to North Berkeley Fire District , Central Berkeley Fire & EMS, Meducare Air, Joint Base Charleston, and Short Stay Recreation Area Joint Base Charleston for your support, partnership, and commitment to preparedness. Your collaboration helps make EMS Week possible, and we greatly appreciate each and every one of you.

Thank you Hold Fast Stills for the amazing photos!

As we kick off EMS Week 2026, Berkeley County EMS would like to recognize and thank the incredible men and women who answer the call each and every day. From emergency response and specialized operations to community outreach, training, and compassionate patient care, our providers continuously demonstrate what it means to serve with professionalism, dedication, and heart.

This week is about celebrating the people behind the uniforms, the EMTs, Paramedics, supervisors, support staff, and partner agencies who work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of others. Whether responding to critical incidents, supporting our community during events, mentoring future providers, or simply offering comfort during someone’s worst day, your impact does not go unnoticed.

Thank you for your commitment to Excellence Through Care and for representing Berkeley County EMS with pride. Happy EMS Week 2026!

Not exactly the day our Bike Team and UTV operators had in mind for the Charleston Airshow, but that didn’t change the mission. Rain or shine, they understood the assignment and showed up ready to serve. From navigating wet conditions to staying visible and accessible for the crowd, these crews remained committed to safety, coverage, and patient care throughout the event. Adaptability is what we do, and this team delivered.

Great work representing BCEMS and taking care of the community, no matter what the weather brings.

Today we were able to take a moment to recognize two of our providers for their demonstrated practice of "Excellence Through Care."

On April 1, 2026 they responded to a critically ill patient, provided life saving actions, and transported that patient who experienced an out of hospital Cardiac Arrest to a local emergency room after they were able to get Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC).

This demonstration of skill and expertise is being recognized with our first ever Clinical Excellence award. This award is being put forth to recognize our crews that encounter situations that test their skills and push them to utilize both the depth and breadth of their training.

We congratulate both Caleb Bishop and Mariana Horton on receiving this inaugural award and look forward to them continuing to provide excellent care to the citizens of Berkeley County.

BCEMS in the state of South Carolina is considered a large EMS system, and it takes the participation and dedication of everyone to keep things running smoothly. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the individuals who play a very special role in that success. While we recognize them on Administrative Professionals Day, their impact is felt every single day, and our appreciation extends far beyond just one occasion. Here’s to an extra day of recognition for a truly deserving group of professionals. Thank you, Fern Humbert, Rebecca Meree, and Judith Penton, for all that you do!
