The FBI investigates federal crimes on nearly 200 reservations, along with the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs. At the end of 2025, the FBI's National Crime Information Center recorded just under 1,500 active cases involving missing Native Americans, though not all become federal cases.

The FBI has established a minimum reward of $25,000 for help in solving some cold cases where people went missing or were killed in Indian Country.

The 1925 case of Leonard Rhinelander v. Alice Rhinelander; 219 A.D. 189; 219 N.Y.S. 548, before the New York Supreme Court in Westchester County, was a lawsuit for the annulment of the marriage between Kip Rhinelander and Alice Jones. Leonard ‘Kip’ Rhinelander came from the well-known and wealthy Rhinelander family of New York City. This trial shows how American law in the past has used ancestry as a means of racial classification and for the purpose of social control.

The exact answer is August 9. The date was formally designated by the UN General Assembly in 1994 through Resolution 49/214. It commemorates the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Populations, which took place in Geneva on August 9, 1982. For 2026, however, the UN has scheduled a related online commemoration event for August 10, focusing on Indigenous midwifery. This separate event does not change the official observance date of August 9.

The observance aims to raise awareness about the rights, cultures, traditions and contributions of Indigenous Peoples around the world.
