Around the holidays, fats, oils and grease (or F.O.G.) are often found in our kitchens. Cooking oil, butter, meat grease, gravy, salad dressing, peanut butter, mayonnaise and dairy products are examples of commonly found F.O.G.

Improper F.O.G. disposal can lead to F.O.G. pollution. When these compounds solidify, they can cause problems in underground sewer pipes and septic systems and harm our waterways.

Tips on F.O.G. disposal:

🦃 Don’t dump F.O.G. down a garbage disposal, sink or storm drain!
🍂 Seal cooled F.O.G. in a can or bottle and dispose of it at a local recycling center or in household trash.
🦃 Remove leftover F.O.G. from pans and dishes by scraping and absorbing with a paper towel. Hot water and soap do not eliminate F.O.G.
🍂 Reusable lids can be used to store F.O.G. in metal soup cans until they are full and ready for proper disposal.

The SC AAS team wishes you a F.O.G. pollution-free and very Happy Thanksgiving!

Berkeley County is conducting a stormwater inventory of the County’s Stormwater Management System in Oak Creek and Longford Place subdivisions of Goose Creek October 6-10, 2025, to assess drainage and flooding concerns.

The County has contracted with Woolpert’s stormwater data collection team for this project. Woolpert’s field personnel will be traveling to properties in these two subdivisions shown on the map HERE: https://berkeleycountysc.gov/wp-content/uploads/docs/Woolpert-Study-Map.pdf?x61963

Field personnel will take measurements and will use GPS or survey equipment and cameras to collect data to help determine the existing Level of Service of the system and provide an alternative analysis to mitigate flooding for the community. They will be identified by name badges, safety vests and/or other items of identification. Each team member will carry identification and can provide additional site-specific information, if necessary.

Inventory of the stormwater management system is conducted to meet the requirements of the County’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System stormwater permit, as required by the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services.

Please allow Woolpert’s field personnel access to stormwater system components on your property for the purpose of data collection. Berkeley County and Woolpert appreciate your cooperation and understanding. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Berkeley County Stormwater at 843-719-4195 or [email protected]

Berkeley County Roads & Bridges Stormwater crews worked late into the evening hours on Friday, June 6, 2025 to recover approximately 5 to 7 gallons of oil that was dumped into a stormwater drain. Incidents such as these can negatively impact the environment and the economy. They can also be extremely harmful to marine life, wildlife, and human health. Stormwater does not go through treatment or filtration. Therefore, it is critical to keep stormwater free of pollutants. Please do your part in keeping our waterways clean. If you see pollutants being discarded into storm drains or ditches please report it to Berkeley County.

If you suspect someone is discharging a pollutant into stormwater drains or ditches, please call (843) 719-4195 or email [email protected]

if possible, include any the following:
* Specific location
* Date/Time
* Type of Pollutant
* Description of violator, license plate, vehicle logos, etc.
* Your contact information
* Pictures/videos of the incident

S.C. Sea Grant Consortium
Registration is OPEN until May 28! The From Seeds to Shoreline® (S2S) program wants you to join our team for the 2025 - 2026 school year! The S2S program, coordinated by the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium in partnership with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources and Clemson University, is the only salt marsh restoration program in the state designed specifically for K–12 students and teachers.
By growing Spartina alterniflora, the dominant plant of southeastern salt marshes, throughout the school year and transplanting young seedlings to areas of the coastline, students learn about the importance of this critical ecosystem and serve as environmental stewards.
Two training sessions will be offered:
June 4, 2025 (New Educator Training): Charleston, S.C., at the S.C. Department of Natural Resources. This is a pre-requisite for new teachers interested in participating in S2S for the upcoming school year. The training offers sessions on salt marsh ecology, restoration techniques, classroom applications, and more! There is no cost to attend. Register at http://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2025S2SNewEducatorWorkshop
June 10, 2025 (Veteran Teacher Workshop): Moncks Corner, S.C. at Old Santee Cannal Park. This is optional for those S2S teachers who have been with the program for at least one year. Join us for a fun-filled day of exploration and networking, new resources, giveaways, and much more! Register at http://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2025VeteranS2Sworkshop
