Due to iffy weather, the Parker’s Ridge Park groundbreaking was held at Station 8 this morning. It is exciting to finally get a county park in SE Chatham. Big thanks to all of the Chatham Staff (especially Parks and Recreation) and the elected officials making this happen…extra big thanks to the Parker family for making the land available for public use!!

My only regret is I didn’t get to meet Leslie Knope or Ron Swanson. Sorry, couldn’t resist. 🤣

Chatham County Announces Parker’s Ridge Park Groundbreaking Ceremony

PITTSBORO, NC—Members of the media are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for Parker’s Ridge Park, a new community park that will serve southeastern Chatham County.

WHAT: Parker’s Ridge Park Groundbreaking Ceremony

WHEN: Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
*Media RSVP Instructions below

WHERE: Future Parker’s Ridge Park Site
994 Pea Ridge Road
New Hill, NC 27562

WHO: Ceremony speakers will include Chatham County Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources, Chatham County leadership, members of the Parker family, and Blum Construction.

Parker’s Ridge Park is named in honor of Atlas and Lola Tart Parker, whose family farmed the land for more than 70 years. In September 2011, the Parker family sold approximately 138 acres to Chatham County at a reduced cost to support park development. In December 2019, the Chatham County Board of Commissioners formally adopted the name Parker’s Ridge Park, reflecting both the family’s legacy and the park’s location on Pea Ridge Road.

The project has been identified in both the 2009 and 2019 Comprehensive Parks and Recreation Master Plans. Since acquiring the property, the County has completed two master planning efforts shaped by extensive community input. Construction is scheduled to begin in late spring 2026.

Located between US 1 and Old US 1, the park will serve southeastern Chatham County, including the Moncure area and residents on both sides of Jordan Lake. The site was selected to meet the need for parkland in this part of the county while preserving its rural character.

Phase I amenities will include the County’s first pump track and inclusive playground, a restroom and picnic shelter with an observation deck, and a walking trail around the pond. The park is expected to be completed in summer 2027.

Residents may visit www.chathamcountync.gov/parks-rec for more information.

Members of the media interested in attending/covering this event should RSVP to Public Information Officer Kara Lusk by April 24th at 919-542-8258 or [email protected].

HEADS UP!!!!

The Chatham County Fire Marshal and Emergency Operations leaders remind residents of the burn ban currently in effect due to hazardous fire conditions. This ban includes any open burning, including within 100 feet of any residence or building and the municipal limits of Goldston, Pittsboro, and Siler City. All burning permits countywide are cancelled until further notice.

“Chatham County continues to receive 911 calls about outside fires,” said Mike Reitz, Chatham County Emergency Operations Director. “Conditions right now are extremely dry, making any outdoor burning—including residential fire pits—dangerous and unpredictable. Residents should avoid all open flames outdoors and help reduce the risk of wildfires and emergency incidents.”

Open burning includes burning leaves, branches, or other plant material. In all cases, burning trash, lumber, tires, newspapers, plastics, or other non-vegetative material is illegal. Under North Carolina law, the NC Forest Service ban prohibits all open burning in all 100 counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits also has been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire. Local fire officials and law enforcement officers are assisting the NC Forest Service in enforcing the burn ban.

“It is spring wildfire season in North Carolina, and we are seeing wildfire activity increase due to dry conditions,” said NC Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “With these ongoing conditions, a statewide burn ban is necessary to reduce the risk of fires starting and spreading quickly. Our top priority is always to protect lives, property, and forestland across the state.”

Chatham County Fire Marshal Billy Judson strongly recommends that only natural gas or propane cooking and recreational devices that do not use solid briquettes and have on/off controls be used during this time and strongly urges all county residents and property owners to be attentive to the conditions of their properties through proactive fire prevention measures. He also discourages the use of fire pits due to the risk of embers that may spark a fire. “We recognize that this decision may alter recreational plans, but the decision to issue a burn ban prioritizes public safety and the protection of property,” said Judson.

The burn ban will remain in place until further notice, and the NC Forest Service will continue to monitor conditions. The public is asked to call 911 to report any wildfires or if they see any fire burning that is not in a gas or charcoal grill. Residents with questions about the burn ban may contact the Chatham County Fire Marshal's Office at 919-545-8342 or visit the NC Forest Service website: https://www.ncforestservice.gov.
