On July 31st at 1647 hrs, Engine 441 was alerted for a fire alarm at the St. James Academy in Monkton. E441 investigated the alarm and, while on scene, personnel spotted a large column of smoke to the north in the area of Old York Road and Markoe Road. As E441 cleared the fire alarm, Fire Dispatch alerted units for a reported barn fire in the 16400 block of Markoe Road.
E441 with a crew of 5 personnel were added to the assignment and arrived on scene ~4 minutes after the initial dispatch and laid a 4” supply line back to the scene. E441 established incident command and reported two connected barn buildings with heavy fire showing. E441 stretched two 1.75” attack lines to protect a third barn and to begin extinguishing the fire.
Due to the rural location in Monkton, E441 operated on-scene for 13 minutes before the next engine arrived (E391). During this time, the fire was contained to the two original buildings and $20K worth of saddles and other horse tack were removed from the other barn. E441 ran out of water for a period of ~ 5 minutes until E391 was able to connect to the supply line. Tanker Support Unit 444 then arrived on location and was able to a lay 5” supply to the pond on the property, which secured a constant water supply for the remainder of the incident. Units operated on-scene for ~3.5 hrs due to the extensive overhaul required.
