On July 31st at 1647 hrs, Engine 441 was alerted for a fire alarm at the St. James Academy in Monkton. E441 investigated the alarm and, while on scene, personnel spotted a large column of smoke to the north in the area of Old York Road and Markoe Road. As E441 cleared the fire alarm, Fire Dispatch alerted units for a reported barn fire in the 16400 block of Markoe Road.

E441 with a crew of 5 personnel were added to the assignment and arrived on scene ~4 minutes after the initial dispatch and laid a 4” supply line back to the scene. E441 established incident command and reported two connected barn buildings with heavy fire showing. E441 stretched two 1.75” attack lines to protect a third barn and to begin extinguishing the fire.

Due to the rural location in Monkton, E441 operated on-scene for 13 minutes before the next engine arrived (E391). During this time, the fire was contained to the two original buildings and $20K worth of saddles and other horse tack were removed from the other barn. E441 ran out of water for a period of ~ 5 minutes until E391 was able to connect to the supply line. Tanker Support Unit 444 then arrived on location and was able to a lay 5” supply to the pond on the property, which secured a constant water supply for the remainder of the incident. Units operated on-scene for ~3.5 hrs due to the extensive overhaul required.

🌡️ Extreme Heat Reminder 🌡️

With extreme heat expected through the end of the week, please remember to stay hydrated, limit your time outdoors whenever possible, and check on family members, neighbors, and pets.

If your air conditioning isn't keeping up, remember that HVAC companies are working tirelessly to respond to an increased number of service calls. Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated as they work to keep everyone safe and comfortable during this heat wave.

We'd like to extend a special thank you to Witkowski Mechanical and J.W. Mechanical Services for always helping keep our members comfortable. Their outstanding service and continued support mean a great deal to our fire company.

We also sincerely appreciate both companies for being valued sponsors of our Hereford Classic Golf Tournament and our upcoming Hereford Fall Festival on October 17th & 18th.

Please consider supporting the businesses that so generously support our community.
Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay safe! 🚒❤️

🚒🐴 Horse Barn Fire Safety Reminder

As the weather gets warmer, many horse owners rely on fans to keep their animals comfortable. However, it's important to know that standard household box fans are not designed for dusty barn environments and can become a serious fire hazard.

Here are a few simple steps to help reduce the risk of a barn fire:

✅ Use agricultural-rated fans designed for barns.
✅ Have electrical wiring and equipment inspected regularly.
✅ Avoid using extension cords as permanent wiring.
✅ Keep hay, bedding, dust, and cobwebs cleaned up.
✅ Store hay properly and watch for signs of overheating.
✅ Keep fire extinguishers readily available and have an evacuation plan for both people and animals.

A few preventative measures can make a big difference in protecting your horses, your barn, and your family.

🚨🚨WORKING FIRE🚨🚨

On June 24th at 2244 hrs, Engine 441, Squad 442, and Tanker 446 were dispatched for a reported residential structure fire on the 13700 Block of Killarney Court in Phoenix (Box 47-15). S442 was picked up from the road while returning from a separate incident while other Station 44 units responded from the fire station.

S442 was first on scene and reported a 2-story single family dwelling with fire showing from the 2nd floor and roof. S442 established command, requested the Tanker Task Force, and assumed 1st due engine company responsibilities. S442 initiated an aggressive interior fire attack and stretched a 1.75” handline to the 2nd floor knocking the bulk of the fire.

E441 assisted with extinguishment and overhaul while the E441 driver assumed the role of Water Supply Officer. T446 deployed the 3,000 gal folding tank and shuttled 6,000 gal of water to the fireground. TSU444 responded to the secondary water source at the Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Company.

Crews successfully prevented the fire from spreading throughout the structure and operated on scene 3 hours. There were no reported injuries as the residents were away at the time of the fire.
