Even though the days are warming up, many people are still using wood stoves, pellet stoves, and outdoor boilers.

Ash can stay hot for far longer than most people expect, and the fine, flashy fuels common in early spring (dry grass, leaves, and brush) can ignite and spread fire quickly under the right conditions.

Here are some tips for safe ash disposal:

- Allow ashes to cool completely before disposing of them.

- Place cooled ash in a tightly covered metal container and store that container at least 10 feet away from your home, decks, sheds, or other structures.

- Never dump ash directly into a trash can or onto the ground. Douse and saturate the ashes with water to ensure they are fully extinguished.

Monmouth Firefighters responded to a small woods fire (approximate .1 acre) off Route 135 this afternoon and quickly contained it. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished before reaching a nearby garage and shed.

The cause of the fire was a result of wood stove ashes that were deposited on the edge of the backyard by the property owner. An honest mistake but a lesson learned to be more careful, especially this time of the season.

Not only is dead vegetation a hazard in the springtime, but with last year’s drought prolonging, the fire danger risk is greater. Please be careful with outdoor burning, disposal of ashes and/or smoking materials.

Thanks to everyone that attended tonight’s annual dinner and awards ceremony at Monmouth Fire Department.

Congrats to Lt. Cody Roy and Sara Fournier who were awarded Firefighter & Jr Firefighter of the Year respectively for 2025.

Other recognition awards included a retirement plaque for Joey Cyr (absent) for 31 years of service and service pins to several members; Hugh LeMaster (50), Steve Arsenault (35), Deputy Chief Ed Pollard (20), Michelle Handley (10), Lt. Jason Roy (5), Ostin Smith (5), Chris Quatrano (5) and Ian Fournier (5).

A heartfelt presentation was made by Auxiliary President Cindy Reny to Pat Smith for his 13 years of dedicated service volunteering as Santa during our Annual Santa Breakfast events.

As mentioned during the dinner, Monmouth FD is so blessed to have such a great group of dedicated and professional firefighters and fire officers. Our Auxiliary members rock, too! Thanks to all of our members for serving your community the past year and going forward.

Last evening, Monmouth Firefighters with the assistance of Wales Fire Department's UTV and several members of the Monmouth Cochnewagan Trailblazers conducted a practical training involving a snowmobile crash with multiple victims.

The location of the incident was 1.5 miles into a woodlot that was accessed by a snowmobile trail. All involved did a great job. From staging apparatus, requesting necessary equipment, setting up Incident Command, accountability, treating the patients, extricating them from the desolate wooded area, and establishing a landing zone for LifeFlight in a nearby field, it was a realistic exercise. All involved found it valuable with lessons learned how to improve our operations should a similar incident occur.

Without the use of our mutual aid equipment and the Trailblazer's member's snowmobiles, accessing the incident location would have been challenging. With a 40-mile trail system located throughout our community, the risk is high for a trail-related rescue mission. Good to know we have outside resources that can provide aid, albeit there is a significant time lapse getting resources on scene.

This is why we train, train and train more. Always striving to be proficient at what we do.

This afternoon, the Monmouth FD, PD, Winthrop Ambulance Service and Winthrop FD responded to Route 202 and Blue Road for a two-vehicle crash with a report of one vehicle on fire with entrapment.

Fortunately, all occupants self-extricated prior to the FD’s arrival and were treated by EMS. Patrol officer Zach Roy knocked down the engine fire with a portable extinguisher and firefighters finished extinguishing the smoldering fire afterwards. Great job Zach.

A shoutout to former MFD firefighter, Scott Kemp who assisted with traffic control while all the apparatus got into positions for safe blocking. Once a firefighter, always a firefighter.

Monmouth FD responded mutual aid to a residence on the Hardscrabble Road in Wayne this afternoon for a reported chimney fire.

Firefighters discovered the fire had extended to the chimney enclosure via an old discontinued thimble opening that was covered up by the wall.
Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished and contained to the chimney.

Great job by all responding departments.

Monmouth, Winthrop and Wales FD’s, Monmouth Police, the Winthrop Ambulance Service and the Maine Warden Service were toned out at 1030 pm this evening for A snowmobile that went through the ice on Annabessacook Lake near the outlet to Jug Stream.

Fortunately, the operator was able to self rescue to the shoreline near the end of Larry Drive and was not injured. He had gotten disoriented driving across the lake trying to find the snowmobile trail on the south end of the lake.

Monmouth and Wales firefighters remained on scene and utilized ropes, ladders, a chainsaw, cold water suits and a winch off Wales FD’s UTV to remove the snowmobile that was resting in 3-4 feet of water. All units cleared the scene by 1230 am. Great work by all involved.
