The City of Monmouth's Transportation Safety Commission, with the help of a Monmouth Parks and Recreation grant, secured ODOT and Cycle Oregon training and equipment at Monmouth Elementary School (MES) for a hands-on learning experience for 6 classes of primary level students grades Kindergarten - 2.

MES PE teacher, Amber Mclean, attended Cycle Oregon training and is teaching bike safety within the regular PE program with bikes and helmets. Over 200 students learned how to wear a helmet (the right way!), how to check a bike's operation, how to use hand brakes, and of course how to be safe on the road. To cap off the unit, Teacher Amber planned a short route through the neighborhood for the 2nd graders with MPD there to support the students and to ensure everyone stayed safe.

We are so grateful for the passion of our volunteers (we see you, Lynda!), the inclusion of our local schools, and the opportunity to participate in such a meaningful way.

This afternoon, the Monmouth Police Department participated in a coordinated traffic enforcement effort focused on school zones throughout Monmouth. This campaign was a cooperative effort involving the Dallas Oregon Police Department, Independence, Oregon Police Department, and the Polk County Sheriff's Office Oregon, with the shared goal of improving safety for students, families, and staff.

The operation focused on deterring hazardous driving behaviors. During the effort, officers conducted 60 traffic stops, resulting in 15 citations, 56 warnings, and one arrest. Notably, there were eight citations for distracted driving, the majority of which occurred near school zones during release times. Throughout the operation, officers prioritized positive educational contacts to increase motorist awareness of school zone requirements.

School zones require extra attention, as slower speeds and increased awareness help protect the most vulnerable members of our community. The Monmouth Police Department appreciates your cooperation and reminds all drivers to remain vigilant, especially during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times.

The Monmouth Police Department is pleased to announce Chief Haines was recognized by his peers at the Oregon Association Chiefs of Police (OACP) annual spring conference last night, where he received the Max Patterson Award. This award is presented for outstanding contributions to the OACP or the community through programs that benefit young people.

The inscription on his plaque reads:

"In recognition of exceptional commitment to the healthy development of youth and the strengthening of community trust in law enforcement. Through your initiative and perseverance, you brought the nationally recognized Tall Cop Says Stop program to Monmouth, creating a rare and impactful opportunity for parents, educators, health professionals, and law enforcement partners to engage together around the challenges facing today's youth.

Your efforts equipped dozens of families and practitioners with critical insight into emerging drug trends, enabling earlier and more effective intervention.

You have demonstrated that prevention, collaboration, and education are not merely programs, but a philosophy of leadership. Your work reflects a deep and genuine concern for the well-being of young people and the community you serve. In doing so, you embody the servant leadership, innovation, and integrity that define the spirit of the Max Patterson Award."

Congratulations, Chief Haines, on this well-deserved recognition. We are all very proud of the work you do for this community and for our team.

Traffic Safety Saturation Project Conducted in School Zones

This morning, the Dallas Police Department participated in a coordinated traffic enforcement effort focused on school zones throughout Dallas. All law enforcement agencies in Oregon have statewide jurisdiction, but most, including Dallas, lack the resources for independent saturation patrols, so agencies help each other. Today's event was a cooperative effort between the Monmouth Police Department, Dallas Police Department, Independence Police Department, and the Polk County Sheriff's Office with a shared goal of improving safety for students, families, and school staff during peak travel times.

This morning, collectively, officers conducted 102 traffic stops resulting in 15 citations, 116 warnings, and 3 arrests for criminal activity detected during the stops.

The focus was on positive educational contacts. The citations focused on hazardous driving, speeding, driving without a valid license or while suspended, or driving uninsured.

School zones require extra attention from motorists. Slower speeds and increased awareness help protect some of the most vulnerable members of our community.

The Dallas Police Department is appreciative of the community’s cooperation and reminds drivers to remain vigilant and operate with due regard for all roadway users.
