Congratulations to Firefighters Lucas Potter and Schuyler Melton! Both firefighters have completed their probationary year at MFD and have proven themselves to be outstanding firefighters. Both firefighters were recently presented with their permanent helmet shield commemorating the completion of their probationary year. This evening at the Monmouth City Council Meeting, Firefighter Schuyler Melton was recognized with the Firefighter Commendation Award. Schuyler received the award for taking quick action to assist with a medical emergency that occurred during an event he was attending while off duty. MFD is very proud of Schuyler for his actions and for his commitment to helping those in need. Congratulations!

MFD would like to recognize several members for their recent service anniversaries. This month, Firefighter Kyle Martin and Firefighter Tim LaFollette are both celebrating 3 years with the department. Also, Firefighter Devon Wade is celebrating 4 years with MFD. Thank you all for your continued service and commitment to the Monmouth Fire Department!

**PRESS RELEASE**
Structure Fire at 1231 Birchwood Drive
Monmouth, Illinois

On Saturday, July 25th at 10:22 PM, the Monmouth Fire Department responded to 1231 Birchwood Drive for a possible structure fire in a single-story four-unit apartment building. While enroute, MFD received information from a Monmouth Police Officer who arrived on scene and confirmed a fire in the residence. Assistant Chief Spears upgraded the alarm to a Working Still to notify off duty personnel to respond along with Warren County Ambulance. Engine 23 arrived on scene and reported moderate smoke visible from the residence and added they would be pulling a 1 ¾ inch attack line. Ladder 40 arrived on scene and Assistant Chief Spears assumed Command and upgraded the alarm to the Box Level requesting the Central Warren and RSP&E Fire Protection Districts to respond for support. Firefighters made quick entry into the residence and were able to knock down the fire within two minutes.

The apartment sustained major smoke and heat damage and is currently uninhabitable. One resident sustained minor injuries from the smoke and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

An investigation into the cause of the fire by Monmouth Fire Department Investigators determined the cause to be accidental.

MFD was assisted by Galesburg Hospital Ambulance Service, RSP&E Fire Protection District, Central Warren Fire Protection District, Monmouth Police Department, Warren County Sheriff's Department, Ameren, and Nationwide Chaplain’s Service. 1-800-BOARDUP responded to the scene to assist with securing the residence and for victim assistance.

Recently, the Monmouth Fire Department had the opportunity to bring our Fire Safety Trailer to Lincoln and Harding Schools for the students to enjoy! The students learned important fire safety tips in a fun and interactive way, and we had a great time spending the day with them!
We would like to thank Lincoln Early Childhood School and Harding Primary School for allowing us to visit and share this experience with their students. We hope everyone has a fun and safe summer!

Recently, four members of the Monmouth Fire Department were awarded with the Firefighter Excellence Unit Citation Award. The awards were issued by the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal during the Medal of Honor Ceremony in Springfield last week.

Assistant Chief Craig Cozadd, Captain Paul Mangieri, Captain Ryan Armstrong, and Firefighter Kyle Martin received the awards for actions that were taken during a fire incident last summer.

The Firefighter Excellence Unit Citation is awarded “For an act of service in the line of duty demonstrating excellence and professionalism in the service to the citizens of the State of Illinois”.

MFD is very proud of the firefighters’ accomplishment. Thank you to the firefighters for your duty and service to the Citizens of Monmouth.
