Decisions made at the State Capitol affect your nursing practice, your workplace, and your patients. WINPAC helps make sure nurses have a voice in those decisions. Your contribution helps support candidates who understand nursing and health care issues, regardless of political party. Because nurses shouldn’t be affected by policy alone. Nurses should help shape it.

Nurses in the News: Future Nurse Saves a Life

We love sharing stories about Wisconsin nurses making a difference, and this time, we’re celebrating a future nurse! Callie Bartels, a nursing student at Southwest Technical College, jumped into action when a customer began choking at the Grant County supper club where she works. Using skills she learned during her CNA training, Callie performed the Heimlich maneuver and saved his life.

For her quick action, Callie received the Grant County Sheriff’s Office Citizen Life-Saving Award.

Congratulations, Callie! We can’t wait to see what your future in nursing holds.

Nurses know there are plenty of things that make a hard job harder than it needs to be. An extra click. A duplicated form. An outdated process. A task no one can quite explain why you’re still doing.

Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation® is taking them on with Make Work Work: A 10-Day Challenge to Reduce Nurse Burnout, beginning August 17. The challenge is built around the Get Rid of Stupid Stuff (GROSS) concept, which encourages healthcare teams to identify unnecessary work that gets in the way of safe, efficient, and meaningful care.

Wisconsin is taking an important step to help address the nursing workforce shortage.

A new emergency rule will enable qualified registered nurses with bachelor's degrees to serve as clinical instructors, thereby expanding nursing education capacity while maintaining high standards for student learning.

WNA Executive Director Gina Dennik-Champion spoke with Wisconsin Public Radio about why this change matters:
"We have all these qualified students that are interested in becoming nurses, but because there are not enough nursing faculty, they're not all getting into nursing school. The criteria remains the same, but it's the capacity issue."

Leaders of Wisconsin nursing schools are optimistic a new emergency rule allowing RNs with bachelor's degrees to teach hands-on courses will help ease a faculty shortage.
